PROTECTING DEVICE FOR FILING.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1913.
Application filed December 11, 1912 Serial No.'736,200. 7
To all whom it mag concern:
Be 1t known that we, JOSEPH CRooKETT and LINNIE LOCKWOOD, cltlzens of the United States, residing at Bandon, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for Piling, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for the protection of piling and more particularly to a device of this character adapted to inclose that part of the piling which is beneath the water to protect the same from'toredor and barnacles and thus prolonging the life of the piling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of eificiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan View, the piling being shown in cross section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of securing the sectionstogethenand Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view. 7
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the body of our improved protecting device which comprises two semicircular sections 2 and 3, each section comprising a plurality of buoyant timbers t which may be of any suitable size and of various lengths to adapt the same to. the diiferent depths of water. These timbers 4: are securely held in position by means of the metallic bands 5 arranged upon the outer side thereof and secured to the sections by means of the screw bolts 6. V
The sections 2 and 3 are provided with oppositely disposed ears 7 which are securely bolted together-by means of the bolt 8 thus fastening the two sections securely together around the outside of the piling. Arranged upon the inner sides of the sections 2 and 3 and at the top and bottom thereof are the scraper blades 9 which are provided with a suitable scraping edge 10 which will remove any object clinging to the piling.
In'the use of our improved device, the sections 2 and 3 are arranged upon the outer side of the. piling and securely fastened in position by means of the bolts 8. Thus the barnacles and other objects which generally fasten themselves upon the wooden pilings will be removed therefrom by means of the scrapers 10, the motion of the water tending to move the body 1 sufficiently to scrape the barnacles from the piling, thus preventing the same from being eaten or. starting the decay thereof. It will be apparent that this device can be manufactured at a low cost and at the same time is extremely simple in its construction.
The device is also positive in its operation and will assist in prolonging the life of the piling when applied thereto.
\Vhile we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is In a device of the character described, the combination of a body comprising two semicircular sections, each section comprising a plurality of buoyant timbers, metallic bands arranged upon the outer sides of the timbers and secured thereto, oppositely disposed ears formed upon each of said bands, bolts securing said ears together, and scraper blades secured to the inner sides of each of said sections and arranged at the top and bottom thereof;
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH CROGKETT. LINNIE LOCKWOOD.
