Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 28, 1917. Serial No. 177,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. BYLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Wilson, in the county of Murray and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in strainers and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature with a plurality of straining mediums through which the liquid to be strained must pass.
Another object of the invention is to make each medium detachable so the same may be cleaned or renewed.
A further object of the invention is to make the mediums of gradually increasing fineness of mesh, beginning at the top to better strain the fluid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a central sectional view through one form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view of a modification, parts being shown in section.
In these figures 1 represents a straining funnel of the usual type, and this funnel at its outlet end is provided with a cylindrical screw threaded part 2. 3 indicates a straining medium located at the beginning of said cylindrical portion, this medium being formed of wire gauze or the like. 4 inclicates a screw threaded ring having a straining medium 5 located centrally thereof and the upper part of this ring is adapted to be screwed into the cylindrical part 2. 6 represents another ring provided with the straining medium 7 having its upper part screw threaded and adapted to be screwed into the ring 4. By joining the rings, and the rings of the body part of the funnel in this manner, the spout of the funnel will taper as in its usual form and may be inserted into openings of various sizes. As more clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the rings consecutively decrease in diameter, the lower ring being the smallest. The lower part of the ring 6 is left plain as at 8. The medium 3 is of coarse mesh, the medium 5 is of finer mesh, while the medium 7 is of still finer mesh, thus the fluid must pass through the three mediums of gradually increasing fineness of mesh so that it will be thoroughly strained and the impurities removed therefrom.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 I show a pail 9 provided with a spout 10 whichis provided with my improved form of strainer.
It will be seen that the rings with the straining material therein may be easily separated for cleaning purposes or when it is desired to use only the one medium.
After using the device it may be separated and the different parts cleaned and the parts placed together again in the minimum amount of time.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make. slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A strainer comprising a body part having an internal screw threaded outlet, a ring having screw threaded ends, said ring being engaged at one end by said threaded outlet, :1 second ring having a screw threaded end for engaging the internal threads of the lower end of the first-named ring, and straining mediums secured to said rings intermediate their ends.
