HAT-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
' Application filed May 7, 1910. Serial No. 559,987.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, LOU IS \VENER, a British subject, residing in the city and State of New Yorkyhave invented certain Improve ments in Hat-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improve-' ments in that class of hat protectors which are especially designed and adapted to be worn over mens hats in such position as to afford effective protection not only of the hat, but also of the head and neck of the wearer against rain, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of; asimple and comparatively inexpensive nature having certain features of novelty and improvement whereby the de-- vice is caused to accommodate itself to the hat and head of the wearer and at the same time is capable of being folded insuch a compact form'as will permit itto be conveniently carried about, as inthe pocket,
for example.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved hat protector, whereby certain important advantages are attained, and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a hat protector constructed according to my invention as the same appears when applied to a hat for use; Fig. 2 is a view showing the improved hat protector detached from the hat and flattened down, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view drawn to an enlarged scale and showing a feature of construction to be hereinafter referred to.
As shown in these views the improved hat protector is constructed from thin flexible waterproofed fabric with a narrow elongated strip 1 secured to and extended around its lower edge portion and adapted to be passed around the outer surface of the upturned coat collar, as indicated in Fig. 1, in such a manner as to prevent effectually the entry of water within such coat collar when the protector is applied in position for use. This narrow strip or collar portion 1 is of such length that its extremities 2 and 4 project beyond the body portion of the protector in position to be passed beneath the wearers chin, and one of these project- 'ing end portions, as 4, is provided with a button 3 engageable with a button hole produced in the'other end portion so that the device may be securely fastened when worn. Above said collar portion 1, the improved protector has an intermediate member or portion 5, herein shown as formed from two correspondingly shaped pieces of thin waterproof fabric stitched or otherwise joined together as shown at 6 in a vertical direct-ion at the rear central partofthe device, said two pieces being so shaped as to permit said intermediate member or portion 5 to be ex tended up around thelateral and posterior sides of the neck and headof the wearer while leaving the face exposed, and being so flared at their upper parts that said member or portion 5 may have sufficient fullness to permit it to be extended over the projecting brim of the hat as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
7 represents a crownport-ion or member, also formed from suitably shaped pieces or sections of waterproof fabric of a thin flexible nature, the pieces or sections whereof the same is formed being suitably shaped to permit said member or portion 7 to fit neatly over the crown of the hat worn beneath the protector, and being joined along their lower edge portions as indicated at 8 upon the drawings, with the upper flared edges of the I intermediate member or portion 5, so that such water as mayv fall upon the crown of the hat is prevented from wetting the same and is shed from such crown portion or member and caused to run down outside the intermediate portion 5 and is delivered by the collar portion 1 outside of the wearers coat.
9 represents a peak or vizor of a well known curved form which is extended around the forward side of the crown member or portion 7 of the improved hat protector, being joined as shown at 10 to the lower edge portion of said crown member at the forward part thereof and being so shaped as to be adapted to extend forwardly therefrom over the projecting forward part of the hat brim over which the improved protector is worn. By preference, as shown in the drawings, in order to afford a neat appearance to the protector, the joint at 10 between the crown member 7 and said vizor 9 is slightly above the jointat 8 between said crown member and the intermediate member 5, so that the forward part of the crown member 7 is caused to fit down snugly over the forward part of the hat crown, while at the same time said peak or vizor 9 is caused to extend forwardly across the forward part of the hat brim so as to shed the water effectively therefrom and prevent the same from collecting inside the upturned edge of the hat brim. The peak 01 vizor 9 is also formed from thin waterproof and flexible fabric. similar to that employed for the remaining parts of the device, and for affording increased strength, .the extremities of said peak or vizor are lapped beneath and secured upon the inner sides of the pieces from which theintermediatememher 5 is formed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings at 11, while each edge of the said intermediate member 5, at'the opposite sides of the opening whereat the face of the wearer is exposed, is provided with a narrow binding 12 extended along its in ner surface with its upper extremity lapped inside of and secured to the extremity of the peak or vizor 9 and also to the crown member 7 above the same.
The improved hat protector constructed according to my inventlon is of anextreme'ly simple and comparatively inexpensive na-;; ture, and is particularly well adapted for use 1 in connection with waterproof coats of craveneted fabric, being of such a thin flexible nature as to permit of being compactly? folded and carried in the pocket when not; required for use, and being capable of ready application over the hat in position to protest the head and neck of the wearer with-} out presenting an unsightly appearance. 1 When worn with such coats, the coats conveniently be provided with a speciali pocket wherein the device may be carried when not desired for use.
It will also be obvious from the above description that the improved hat protector constructed according to my invention is susceptible of considerable change without;
material departure from the rinciples and spirit of the invention, and or this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts of the device herein .set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A collapsible hat protector formed of thin waterproofed fabric, and having an elongated collar portion adapted to be passed about the coat collar of the wearer, the extremities of the collar portion being adapted to overlap, when the device is in operative position, such overlapping portion being provided with cooperating fastening means for securing the device in position, an intermediate member joined to said collar portion, and adapted to be extended upwardly therefrom about the lateral and posterior sides of the wearers head and open at its forward side to expose the face of the wearer, a crown portion joined to the upper part of said intermediate portion and adapted to be extended over the crown of the hat, a vizor formed from flexible material joined to the inner surface of the forward part of the crown portion above the junction of the intermediate member and the crown portion, and adapted to be extended across the forward part of the hat brim, and having its end portions extended and secured to the intermediate member and to the crown portion, and binding strips secured along the edges of the intermediate member at the opening in the forward part thereof, and being of a width to extend a distance inwardly of the intermediate member, said binding strips overlapping the extended end portions of the vizor and being secured to said extended portions and to the crown.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
