RAIN-SHIELD.
Application riled January 26, 11 920. Serial-No. 354,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJAcoB' WARsHAwsKY, a citizen" of the United States, residing in the Bronx, in the city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rain-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a temporary protection from the'weather and more particularly to such a temporary covering for the shoulders and for the head of a person with the hat worn thereon. V
The accompanying drawings, referred to 7 herein and constituting a parthereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, andtogether with thejdescription, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings Figures 1 and 2 show the article as worn on the person as a protection againstthe storm;
Fig. 3 isa side-view of "the article Fig. 4 is a development of the sheet from which the article is made; and
Fig; 5 shows the application of the reinforcing strip and the tying means.
Objects of the invention are to provide a temporary protection for hats and clothing,
and for the wearers thereof, from rain, sleet, snow and other meteorological inclemencies, such as might be generally and economically available at news-stands, drug stores, cigar stores and other handy places on occasions .when umbrellas have not been prepared beforehand or have been forgotten.
The common or usual procedure is to s rent umbrellas, that is, the traveler deposits the purchase price or supposed value of the umbrella with the dealer and upon subsequently returning the umbrella, the money is refunded, less the rental charge,
' which is usually ten cents per day. This necessitatesthe return of the umbrella upon the next succeeding day, frequently at great inconvenience,or as an alternative, the multiplication. of the rental charge if not so returned.
The present invention provides protector from the weather which is purchased outright, usually at the same expense as renting an umbrella, which protector, is dis-- carded as soon as his ultimate destination is reached by the traveler. The article of the present invention also is neat and compact handling prior to sale material of which the protector is made must possess the property of completely shedding rain,f sn0w or sleet for a fairly protracted time. It must be also of sufficiently low cost to permit of its temporary use, that is, to permit of its being worn once through a stormand then thrown away. It also should illustrative embodiment Specification of Letters Patent. PatentedSeptQZY, 1921,
be, preferably, capable of being folded flatly and compactly without impairing its weathershedding properties, so that it can becompactly and attractively packaged for sale. It is also essential or desirable that it be of reasonably neat and attractive appearance, so that an ordinary traveler would wear it Without hesitation. It is also desirable that the material be attractively and unobtrusively colored or colorable.
I have found waterproofed paper, such as oiled or paraflined paper, to meet these requirements. The device is also rendered sufiiciently strong to withstand ordinary use, and for this purpose, a reinforcing strip 1 is run about the edges thereof and suitably attached thereto as by stitching 9, and the fastening means, such as strings 2 and 3, are fastened tothe reinforcing strips 1.
. The device is formed preferably of a sinwearer and the part 8 incloses his shoulders.
The manner of wearing will appear, from Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be understood that departures may be made from the details of the invention as herein embodied and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
. What I claim is z- Y 7 g 1.. A temporary and inexpensive protector from the Weather, adapted to fit loosely over the head and shoulders, consisting of a sin.- gle sheet of Waterproofed paper, out approximately in the form of a thick and inverted letter T, the stem portion forming the head protecting portion, the free end edge of the stem of the T being folded upon itself and stuck together to form the top of the protector, and the cross-bar of the T folding about the shoulderszof the wearer and means for fastening the ends or" the cross-bar part under the chin of the wearer. 2. A temporary and inexpensive protector for the head and shoulders from the Weather consisting of a single sheet of Waterproofed paper shaped to. conform to the head and shoulders when orn and to fold flatly for chin by a single knot;
name to this specification.
JACOB WARSHAVSKY;
