To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS ARETAS Kos- SUTi-r SHoTwELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Paltz, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Square, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steel squares, those in general use by reason of their form, the tongue and blade being one, ofttimes prove burdensome, whereas my object provides a square embodying rare compactness.
My improvement relates to Steel squares comprising a blade and tongue as separate parts, the blade being formed by the union of a body and face plate, said body having an interior cross-head groove and channel, the tongue being movably attached to the blade, so mounted as to be maintained at a horizontal position, to rotate upward until perpendicular, and to retreat into the channel. I attain these novel features by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section embodying my invent-ion, defining the interior cross-head groove, and showing the channel, the tongue movably Seated in said cross-head groove, maintained stationary.
Fig. 2 represents the blade showing theV tongue in retreat. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blade illustrative of the correlation of the tongue with said blade, whereas Fig.4 is an end section of the blade, on the line 4 4, Fig. 3, showing the pocket together with the several attached rivets.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the cross-head groove. AA designates the channel. B designates a stop rivet. C designates a pivot rivet, provided as a guide and control of the tongue. D designates guide rivets. Said several rivets pass through the said cross-head groove, immovably attached to the blade. o
E designates guide slots, said slots forming a mild spring attachment with the guide rivets D forming a lock.
F designates the Slotted center of the tongue, movably engaged with the pivot rivet C. G designates an angular slot provided in conjunction with the stop rivet B as limiting said tongue in its lateral movement, likewise providing freedom for the tongue to rotate. p
H refers to a thumb nail recess provided for removing the tongue from the blade. I refers to cutaway portion of the blade provided for similar convenience.
J refers to the rounded corner of the tongue providing freedom in its rotating.
X refers to the walls defining the channels in the blade. It is obvious that the tongue byr reason -of its engagements with the rivets B and D, in conjunction with the shoulders of walls X, is maintained stationary at right angle position to the blade as shown in Fig. 1, and likewise obvious that when disengaged from said rivetsfby reason of its being movably engaged with pivot rivet C, it is free to rotate upward until perpendicular, and retreat downward into the'channel as shown in Fig. 3.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination in a square comprising a blade provided with lan interior crosshead groove and stop rivet and also with'a pivot rivet, a tongue Aprovided with an angular Slot engaging with said stop rivet, movably seated in Said cross-head groove, Said tongue having a longitudinal slot to receive said pivot rivet, Substantially as set forth.
2. The combinati-on in a square comprising a blade provided with an interior crosshead groove and stop rivet, a tongue provided with an angular slot engaging with said stop rivet, movably seated in said crosshead groove, said blade provided with dual guide rivets in alinement longitudinally of the blade, said tongue provided with dual guide sllots in its rear edge, engaging with said guide rivets as means in maintaining said tongue Stationary, substantially aS set forth.
3. The combination in a square comprising a blade provided with an interior crosshead groove and stop rivet, a tongue provided with an angular slot engaging with said stop rivet, movably seated in said crosshead groove, said blade provided with dual guide rivets, said tongue provided With dual tate upward until perpendicular and slidguide slot-s, engaging with said guide rivets ably travel in said pocket, substantially as as means in maintaining said tongue staset forth.
