Be it known that I, HENRY W. JAooBs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Topcka,.in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riveters, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of my specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a portable jaw riveter, preferably shown as pneumatically operated; the object of the invention being to provide a riveter that will operate in extremely narrow and difficult places as for example in channel iron columns and girders, being more especially intended for use on sectional fire boxes wherein each section is composed of channel iron thus necessitating the employment of a long narrow jawed riveter, the constructions of riveters at present supplied on the market being absolutely unadapted for such use.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a riveter of economical construction and simplicity, wherein a double acting cylinder is secured to the riveter and preferably beyond the extremities or radius of the jaws with which the piston-rod of the cylinder is connected by means of compression mechanism; the cylinder being supported on the riveter by suitable mechanism which preferably has support at the pivotal point of the jaws and is adapted to keep the cylinder constantly in proper alinement with the jaws, to wit substantially at the longitudinal center ot the jaws, so that adjustment for different grips between the dies of the riveter is unnecessary.
It is apparent from the nature of my invention that its range of usefulness will be very wide, and that the riveter is adapted to many situations where the present constructions now on the market could not be used.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved riveter. Fi 2 is aside elevation thereof, with the cylmder being shown in vertical section.
In the exemplification of my invention, the riveter comprises the two members 3 and 4, made of any suitable material, having the elongated jaws as shown, and ovided with corresponding lugs through w ich the pivot pin 5 extends. The members or jaws 3 and 4 are of course so formed that when (the one set of ends are separated the opposite ends of the members will be brought together, and vice verse; that is, when the ends of the jaws to which power is applied are forced apart, the ends of the jaws rovided with the rivet sets 6 and 7 will be forced together to drive the rivet.
Pivoted on the pivot pin 5, and extending longitudinally on both sides of the riveter, is a frame composed of bars 8, 8, to the outer ends of which is rigidly secured a cylinder 9. The cylinder is held-substantially at the longitudinal center of Jthe riveter by the rods 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, wherein one of the rods 8 is shown broken away, and the piston 10, through it's piston-rod 11, is pivotally connected with links 12 and 13, whose opposite ends are pivotally connected with the ends of the riveter members 3 and 4, see Fig. 2, thus practically forming a toggle joint.
Preferably rigidly secured to the riveter, as for example to the member 3, is a suitable valve 14 whereby the driving medium or fluid can be controlled in its passage to the cylinder. I prefer to employ what may be termed a four-way valve having connection with the cylinder through suitable pipes 15 and 16. Pipe 15 leads from the valve 14 to the power or driving end of the cylinder 9,
while pipe 16 leads from the valve 14 to thereleasing end of the cylinder.
In order that the piston rod may be maintained substantially at the longitudinal center of the riveter, I provide the guide yokes 17, 17 which are secured to the bars 8, 8, and are provided with a longitudinal slot through which the pin '18 extends; the pin- 18 constituting the pivotal connection between the outer end of piston rod '11 and the ends of links 12 and '13; suitable nuts and washers being, of course, employed on the outer ends of the pin and so secured thereon as to permit of the free movement of the pin in the slot, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in each yoke 17.
It is understood, of course, that valve 14 is connected to any suit-able source of supply of the driving medium or fluid, which .may be conveyed to the valve through suitable means and admitted through the admission connection 14, so that when the lever 19 is moved to the right, the driving medium or fluid will be allowed to flow through pipe 15, thereby driving piston and its rod 11 outward, which in turn will force links 12 and 13 into substantially vertical position in the side elevation shown in Fig. 2.
The movement of the pivotal connection be 10 tween the piston-rod 11 and the links 12 and 13 toward the pivotal connection between the jaws, it is apparent, will move the outer ends of both links outwardly and thereby force the connected ends of the jaw- 15 members apart and bring the operating or riveting ends of the jaws 3 and 4 together. By moving lever 19 to the left, the driving medium or fluid will be released from the outer end of the cylinder 9 causing driving 2 fluid or medium to pass through pipe16 and enter the cylinder on the opposite side of the piston, which causes the piston-rod to move inward, thereby drawing the outer ends of links '12 and 13, and the ends of members 3 and 4 to which the links are connected, toward each other and move the operating or riveting ends of the jaws apart.
In order that the riveter may be conven- 3o iently handled, I provide means, shown in the drawing, in the nature of an eye-bolt 20, properly secured on one of the jaws and back of the pivotal point between the jaws, whereby the riveter may be suspended by any suitable means from a crane or fixed point if desired.
By employing the principle of a toggle joint, it can readily be seen that the method of applying power is not only simple in con to struction but at the same time productive of great power; and in keeping the cylinder in direct alinement with the longitudinalcenter of the riveter, a very eflicacious construction is had, the simple arrangement of as which is of great advantage and results in a direct application of power whereby a steady, continuous pressure is obtained,
thereby eliminating the spasmodic or variable piston travel which is so common in the 5d fluid power riveters at present in use.
I have shown and described my improved riveter of the pneumatic type, but it is apparent that the same may either be pneumatic or hydraulic by the employment of a cylinder of suitable size but of the same arrangement and principle.
My improved construction obviates the.
necessity of any adjustment for difierent grips of the dies, as is necessary in connection with the type of jaw riveters at present employed, other than the pressure of the fluid or medium that operates the piston.
I have shown and described what I believe to be the simplest and best construction of my invention, but it is evident that certain changes may be made, as practice may dictate, without however departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood, therefore, as limiting myself to the exact construction shown and described, but
What I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of members having elongated jaws and pivot-ally secured together at a point intermediate of their ends, a double acting cylinder arranged at the ends of said members, means secured at the pivotal points of said members and to the cylinder whereby the latter is maintained in its relative position, a pair of links pivotally secured to the piston rod of the cylinder and to the adjacent ends of the members and arranged to move substantially at right angles to the piston rod when the latter moves outwardly, and guide-ways secured to said means and having slot and pin connection with the outer end of the pistonrod and the adjacent ends of said links, whereby the pivotal connection between the links and the piston rod will be made to move substantially along the longitudinal center of the device.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of jaws pivotally secured together at a point intermediate of their ends, a supporting frame secured atthe pivotal point of the jaws and extending substantially parallel therewith, a cylinder mounted on said frame in alinement with the longitudinal center of the device and provided with a piston, and means connected with the rod of the piston and with the aws whereby the thrust of the piston will actuate the aws.

A device of the class described, comprising a pair of jaws, pivotally secured together at a point intermediate of their ends, a double acting cylinder provided with a piston, means secured at the pivotal connection of the jaws (whereby said cylinder will be held in alinement with the longitudinal center of the device, means pivotally securedto the piston-rod of the piston and to the adj acent ends of the jaws whereby the jaws are actuated as the piston rod reciprocates, and means with which the outer end ofthe piston-rod has sliding engagement whereby the outer end of the piston-rod will be guided in its movements.
