Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CORINNE E. THORN- TON, a citizen of the United States, and MARIE THORNTON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residents of Los Angeles, county of Los .Angeles, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bandeau and Hat F asteners, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention is an improvement in bandeau and hat fasteners, and has for its object the provision of a simple and cheaply constructed device of the character specified, especially designed for holding ladies hats in place, without injury to the hat or to the wearer, or to others, and which may be easily applied or removed.

The present embodiment of the invention comprises a shield having substantially triangular ends, a front wall 2, a rear wall 2, and a top wall 3, which is provided with laterally extending perforated lugs 4t for permitting the shield to be secured to the hat, as indicated in Fig. 1. The shield may be arranged as indicated in Fig. 1, that is, inside the hat, and extending transversely of the center of the crown. When so arranged the shield is straight with respect to its long axis. The longitudinal contour of the shield depends upon its position, with respect to the hat, and it is shaped to fit in such position. It will be obvious, however, that the shield might be arranged at either side of the transverse center, or alongside the side wall of the crown, inside or outside of the said crown. When arranged alongside the said side wall, it will be obvious that the shield will be shaped to fit the wall. A rod or shaft 5 is journaled longitudinally of the shield in the ends 1, and the said rod extends beyond the shield at each end, and each end is pointed as indicated at 6. At suitable intervals the rod is provided with laterally extending teeth 7 which, in the present construction are integral with the rod, the rod being doubled upon itself to form the said teeth. Each tooth has a blunt point 8, in order to prevent injury to the scalp, if accidentally engaged therewith, and each tooth is provided with a straight shank 9, connecting the curved bill 10 of the tooth with the rod. The wide side 2 of the shield is provided. with a plurality of key hole slots 11, one for each tooth for permitting the passage of the tooth, and the rod is longitudinally movable in the shield, to bring the teeth into register with the large portions 11 of the slots, or in register with the small portions 12 thereof.

As indicated in Figs. 2, and 8, the slots 1112 are so arranged that when the teeth are in register with the portions 12 of the slots, the teeth are locked from movement in either extended or retracted position. Each tooth is provided with a shoulder 13, which in the present instance is formed by offsetting the tooth from the shank, and the said shoulder by its engagement with the shield wall prevents the retraction of the tooth. The rear wall 2 of the shield is provided with an opening 2 for permitting the passage of the portion 13 of the teeth. The portion 12 of the slot 1112 is inside the are described by the tooth in its swinging movement, so that when the teeth are retracted and in register with the portions 12 of the slots, the points of the teeth will engage the shield face, to prevent the extending of the teeth. The rod 5 is provided with a head 14 at each end, and the said head may be of any desired shape, size, or material. The heads are detachable, each having a socket 15, for receiving the adjacent point 6 of the rod. The socket and the point may be connected by a thread as indicated at 6 in Figs. 2 and 4, or in any other suitable or desired manner.

The invention in its simplest form consists of the rod having the laterally extending teeth and mounted for rotation and for longitudinal movement in the crown of the hat, and preferably transversely thereof, the detachable heads outside the crown for turning the rod, and the shield having means for locking the rod with the teeth in extended or retracted position.

It will be obvious that many changes might be made within the scope of the appended claims.

In using the device shown, the shield plate is arranged in the crown of the hat, and the points are passed through the hat and engaged with the detachable heads. Normally when not in use, the teeth are retracted, and held locked by moving the rod longitudinally in the proper direction. Then the hat is properly set, the rod is moved longitudinally to bring the teeth in register with the portions 12 of the slots. turned to extend the teeth, and the rod is returned longitudinally to original position,

thus locking the teeth in extended position.

In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the teeth 19 are provided with rings 20,1instead of with the shoulder 13, the said rings acting in the same manner as the shoulder.

As shown in Fig. 1, the plate or shield isattached to the lining 23 of the hat.

We claim: 1. A device of the character specified,com-

prising a shield plate provided at each end with a bearing, a rod journaled in the bearings and movable longitudinally, said rod having spaced laterally extending teeth, each tooth comprising a straight shank and a point curved on an arc whose center is the rod, the

shield plate having an opening for each tooth to permit the passage of the tooth when the rod is rotated, each opening having a lateral extension out of register with the tooth for preventing the passage of the tooth, the tooth having an oil-set portion for engagingthe edge of the extension when the The rod is then rod is moved longitudinally in one direction to lock the tooth in extended position, said plate having means whereby it may be connected to a hat.

2. A device of the character specified, comprising a plate, a rod journaled longitudinally of the plate on one side thereof, and slidable longitudinally, said rod having a plurality of laterally extending teeth, and the plate having openings for permitting the passage of the teeth when the rod is rotated, each opening having a lateral extension out of register with the end of tooth for preventing the passage of theteeth, each tooth having an offset portion for engaging the edge of the extension when the rod is moved longitudinally in one direction to lock the teeth in extended position.

3. A device of the character specified,

comprising a plate for attachment to a hat,

a rod journaled alongside the plate, and slidable longitudinallythereof, said rod having a plurality of laterally extending teeth, and the plate having openings for permitting the passage of the teeth when the rod is rotated, and means in connection with the rod and the plate for locking the teeth in extended or in retracted position when the said rod is moved longitudinally in one direction.
