UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. ROBERTS, OF NEW YGEK, AND MARK T. FLANAGAN, OF NORTH TARRY- TOWN, NEW YORK.
WINDOVV-LOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 23, 1911.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912. Serial No. 656,282.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnonen B. ROBERTS and MARK T. FLANAGAN, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, and North Tarrytown, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lVindow-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to windows having up and down sliding sashes, and the object is to provide a new and improved mechanism by which the sashes may be readily and securely locked by a single operation.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a locking device on a window frame and having transverse bolts adapted to register with keepers in the sash stiles at the time when the latter are properly positioned to receive said bolts.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the window showing more particularly one of the locking devices for locking the stiles in place, the section being on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is asectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The window casing A is provided with the usual vertical grooves or gnideways B, B in which are mounted to slide up and down pairs of stiles C and D, connected with the lower and upper sashes F and G. The stiles C and D are provided at their outer faces with keepers I, I adapted to be engaged by transversely-extending bolts J, J attached to a transversely extending push bar K mounted to slide in suitable bearings arranged on the corresponding side of the casing A, and the push bar K extends into the room and is provided at its terminal with a knob K under the control of the operator for imparting a transverse sliding movement to the push bar K with a view to engage or disengage the bolts J, J with or from the keepers I, 1. Each push bar K is connected by one or two lovers L with a second bar N extending transversely and mounted to slide in suitable hearings on the corresponding side of the window frame A, and the bar N is provided with transverselyextending bolts J J adapted to engage keepers I I secured to the inner faces of the stiles C, D and. C, D.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be noticed that the bolts J, J extend in an opposite direction to the bolts J J and when a sliding movement is given to the push bar K in the direction of the arrow a (see Fig. 2), then a sliding movement in a reverse direction is given to the bar N so that the bolts J J, J 2 and J 3 move simultaneously out of engagement with their keepers I, I, I and I and when the push bar K is moved in the reverse direction of the arrow athen the bolts J, J, J 2 and J 3 are simultaneously moved into engagement with their keepers I, I, I and I Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:
The combination with awindow casing and upper and lower window sashes mounted to slide vertically in said casing and provided with side portions having keepers on their opposite faces of which the keepers on the outer faces of the sashes are adapted to aline when those on the inner faces of the sashes are alined, of a push bar mounted to slide transversely in the casing and provided with bolts adapted to engage in the keepers upon the outer faces of the sashes, a second bar mounted to slide transversely in the casing and having bolts adapted to engage the keepers on the inner faces of the sashes, and a lever fulcrumed in the casing and connecting the bars with each other.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. ROBERTS. MARK T. FLANAGAN. Witnesses:
