To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, CARL H. SCHMID- GALLand ORA A. BAnNnwoL'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the count-y of Peoria and StateA of -illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge-Holding Devices; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it -appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a device for attachment to a door frame or other support and adapted for engaging and holding a door-hinge. v

The invention has for its object to provide a device for engaging and securely holding the hinge of a door and to take the place of the usual holding-screws.

It is well known that much time and considerable careful work is required in hanging doors, especially screen-doors, and it is also known that when the screw holes in the wood become worn by constantly removing and replacing the screws, larger yones or those of greater length must be used; there being a time when the holes have become so enlarged and ,worn that the hinges must be changed to new positions on the door and upon the door frame in order that the door can be properly and securely hung.

It is the purpose of the invention in view of this to provide a stationary device to engage and hold the hinges so'that said hinges need never be changed in position on the door. Furthermore one of the purposes is to provide a hinge-holding device that will accommodate any usual type of hinge, the device being made to receive a standard hinge rather than requiring a special make.,

And while the invention is susceptible of various changes we have illustrated in the drawing a form that answers the purpose admirably.

Figure 1 shows a portion of a door frame, and a part of a door showing the door hinge and our hinge-holding device'. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the said hinge and the holding device, and Fig. 3 shows the said device in perspective.

In the first two figures a portion of a door-frame or other support is indicated at A while B is a portion of the door.

C illustrates an ordinary spring hinge attached to the door, the same being made up of the usual leaves D E connected hingedly in any usualmanner.

F is a member which may be a casting or of pressed steel having at its ends eX- tensions Gr projecting below the plane thereof and adapted to be secured to the door frame by means of screws H, for instance7 there being a recess J created by projecting said extensions as described and shown, and into which the part D of the hinge is inserted. Both the leaves D E of said hinge are provided wit-h the screw-holes K those of the member E receiving screws for the door and indicated at L. The other holes K of the hinge-leaf D, however, do not receive screws, but in the leaf F above and in register with said holes Ky are holes M. Hinged to the said member F in any suitable manner, for instance, in using a hingepin F2 is a plate N from the under side of which project a series of lugs O preferably tapered and adapted to enter the holes M and the said holes K in the said hinge-member D, there being preferably provided any suitable spring P or its equivalent by which to hold the said plate. N rmly and positively upon the member F as its normal position. The said member F is preferably provided with raised ribs or flanges N', F ig. 3, within which the plate N lies, these flanges serving to prevent any shake in the said plate should the hinge-pin F2 be loose. Upon one or bot-h of the portions of which the member F receives the pin F2 is a lug N which is a limiting stop for the plate N so that that member will not be raised so high as to endanger the spring.

from its edge, or where the door abutsv against it will receive t-he full width of the leaf D, and the recess J is just large enough to receive the latter so that after t-he lugs O engage the holes K thereof the hinge will not be permitted to shake or have movement within said recess. As there is a standard for the position of the screw holes and the size of the same, it is clear that if the lugs O of the plate M are properly disposed upon that member the device will receive and hold any hinge.

In placing the door in position after the hinges and the device are once properly set it is only necessary to raise the plate N, insert the hinge leaf D and release said plate. The lugs will enter the holes and securely hold the hinge until released by a like operation.

It is clear that we have provided a device that will receive and hold any hinge bought from stock. rlhe screw-holes in most all makes are spaced in the same manner so that a hinge taken at random can be at once utilized. The hinge is not made to receive the holder but the latter is made to fit the hinge.

It is not the desire to confine ourselves eX- actly to what is shown and described since changes may be made as will fairly fall within the invention and as will be covered by the appended claims.

Having described our claim l. In a device of the nature described, the combination with a hinge-leaf provided with screw holes of a member to receive said leaf, and also provided with holes to register with those of said leaf, and a part provided with projections adapted to enter both series of holes.

2. In a device of the nature described, the combination with a door and its hinge, the latter having a leaf provided with perforations, of a device to receive said leaf, and an elastically held part pivotally carried by the device and provided with an extension to engage the perforation of the said projecting part of the hinge.

3. In a device of t-he nature described, the combination with a hinge, one of its leaves being provided with screw holes, of a device to receive the leaf having the holes, and a movable part having an extension to engage one of the said screw holes.

having screw-holes, of a device adapted to receive the leaf, and a series of lugs o-n the said device adapted to engage the screw holes of the leaf.

5. In a device of the nature described, the combination with a hinge-leaf, of a device to receive and inclose said leaf, and a pivotally mounted member having means to en gage and hold said leaf.

6. In a device of the nature described, the combination with a hinge-leaf having an aperture, of a device adapted to be secured to a support, and including a part spaced from said support leaving a recess to receive the leaf, said part having an aperture in register with the aperture of said leaf, a member carried by the device and provided with a lug to enter both the apertures, and means to maintain a constant pressure upon the member.

7 In a device of the nature described, the combination with a hinge having a screw` hole, and a support, of a device secured tothe support comprising a plate spaced from said support and adapted to receive part of the hinge beneath it, there being a hole in said plate in register with one of the screw holes of the hinge, a member carried by said plate and provided with a lug to enter the hole in said plate `and that of the hinge, and means to normally place pressure upon said member in the direction of the plate.

8. A hinge holding device comprising a part adapted to be secured to a support, and having a recess to receive the hinge, a member hingedly carried by the said part, a spring in control of and adapted to move the member in the direction of the said part, there being an aperture in the latter and a lug carried by the member adapted to enter the aperture and engage the hinge.
