Be it known that I, FRANK I). STRoBo'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Mattress Rests or Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bedsteads and `relates particularly to adjustable back rests or supports therefor.

The object of the invention is to provide improved and simplified means for operating an adjustable support for the back section of a mattress which will be strong, durable and effective for its designed purpose; which may be conveniently operated by a person lying in the bed, and the operation of which requires very little strength; and which will remain in any adjusted position without being locked.

To this end, a back rest of my invention comprises the various features,combinations of features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated,-Figure 1 is a side view of a bedstead equipped with a back rest of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the head end of a bedstead with my improved back rest applied thereto; and Figs. 3 and 4L are enlarged fragmentary sectional elevations on the lines 33 of Fig. 2, and 4 4: of Fig. 3, respectively.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the head and foot, respectively, of a bedstead, and 3 and l the side rails thereof, all of which may be of any usual or improved construction, and will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art without a detailed description thereof. Supported on said bedstead, preferably on springs, not shown, is a mattress 5, the head end or section 6 of which is adapted to be raised and lowered to bring the same into any desired angular position by means of my improved rest or support, which I will now describe.

Rotatably mounted below the side rails 3 and 1, in suitable bearings thereon, is a transverse shaft 7 secured to rotate with which is a support for the head end of the mattress, said support consisting of side members 8 and 9, a transverse member 10 which connects the outer ends of the side Specification of Letters Patent.

members 8 and 9, and downwardly extending arms 11 formed at the inner ends of said side members 8 and 9. In the preferable construct-ion shown, the different members of said support are made integral with each other by bending a piece of angle iron, pipe or the like into proper shape to form the members of said support. In order that the springs may not interfere with raising and lowering said support, the side members 8 and 9 thereof extend outside of the side rails 3 and 1. The transverse member 10 of said support extends beneath the mattress and above the side rails so that said side rails will not interfere with raising said mattress. The arms 11 are for the purpose of supporting the side and transverse memsaid sockets 13 being slotted at one side, thus 'providing for rigidly clamping said heads to said shafts by means of clamping screws 14. To provide for adjusting said arms, and thus the support, vertically, said arms are fitted to holes 15 formed in the heads 12, so as to be movable endwise therein, the sides of said holes being slotted, and said arms 11 being adapted to be secured in adjusted positions therein by clamping screws 16 adapted for contracting the holes in said head, to which said arms are fitted, so that the sides of said holes will firmly grip said arms. The means for operating said back rest or support is as follows :-Secured to rotate with the shaft 7 to which said support is connected is a worm wheel 17, with which meshes a worm 18, secured to rot-ate with a'worm shaft 19 rotatably mounted in suit-able bearings on the bedstead. Rotation is adapted to be imparted to the worm `shaft 19 from a shaft 20 rotatably mounted on the side rails 3 and 4L by means of intermeshing bevel gears 21 and 22 secured to said shaft 20 and worm shaft 19, respectively. The shaft 20 is adapted to be turned by means of a hand wheel 23.

In order that my improved back rests lmay be made and sold separate from the bed'- steads, and to provide for reversing them so that they may be operated from either side of the bed, I preferably construct my said back rest or support in the form of a separate attachment adapted to be detachyably secured to a bedstead. To this end,

t-he bearings for the various shafts of my improved rest or support are formed in hangers 24 and 25 adapted to be removably secured to the side rails 3 and 4 of the bedstead. The shaft bearings for the shafts 7 and 20 in said hangers are formed in bearing bosses 26 and 27 formed on webs 28, forming the body portions of said brackets and the bearings for the worm shaft 19 are formed in bosses 29 at the outer ends of the brackets 30 on the hanger 24.

As shown in the drawings, the side rails 3 and 4 are made of angle-iron and the brackets 24 and 25 are adapted to be secured thereto so as to be quickly and conveniently attached thereto and detached therefrom, in the following manner :-At their upper ends, the webs, 28 of said hangers are bent reversely, first inwardly and then outwardly, to form spaced flanges 31 and 32, between which are grooves or spaces 33, sufliciently wider than the thickness of the flanges of the angle-irons forming the side rails. 3 and 4, to receive said side rail flanges freely, said grooves or spaces being shown as at least twice as wide as the thickness of said side rail flanges. The hangers 24 and 25 having been adjusted to the flanges of said side rails with the upper flanges 32 rest-ing on the fianges of the side rails, said hangers are clamped to said side rails by means of clamping screws 34 threaded through the bottom flanges 31, the upper ends of which bear against the under sides of said side rail flanges, thereby clamp,-

ing said hangers firmly to said side rails.`

My invention, however, contemplates the use of any desired or approved form of side rail, and any means for attaching said hangers thereto.

In order to retain the mattress in engagement with my improved rest or support when the same is raised, a strip or strips of suitable flexible material, as webbing, canvas or the like, is secured to the side members 8 and 9, so as to extend across the space between said members. As shown, a single piece of canvas 35 is thus secured across said space.

I claim 1. A back rest for a bedstead adapted for supporting the back section of a mattress, said back rest comprising side members and downwardly extending arms at the inner ends of said side members, and a shaft to which said downwardly extending arms are secured so as to be adjustable endwise thereon, substantially as described.

2. A back rest for a bedstead adapted for supporting the back section of a mattress, said back rest comprising side members and downwardly extending arms at the inner ends of said side members, a shaft, heads secured to rotate with said shaft provided with holes to which the downwardly extending arms on the side members of said back rest are fitted so as to be adjustable endwise therein, and means for securing said arms in adjusted positions in said heads, substantially as described.

8. A back rest for bedsteads adapted for supporting the back section of a mattress, and means for adjusting said rest pivotally, said means comprising transverse shafts rotatably mounted in bearings on the side rails of the bedstead one of which sustains the weight of said back rest and the other being the operating shaft, and gearing connecting said shafts, comprising a worm shaft, a worm thereon, a worm gear on one of said transverse shafts which intermeshes with said worm and intermeshing beveled gears on said worm shaft and the transverse shaft other than that to which said worm gear is secured, said operating shaft projecting beyond the side rail of the bedstead, and a hand wheel or the like secured to said shaft outside of said side rail, whereby said operating shaft may be turned to raise or lower said back rest by an occupant of the bed when said bed is made up, substantially as described.
