SMOKE-FLUE BASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Smoke-Flue Base, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in smoke flue bases or chimney attachments, and has for an object the provision of an improved structure for preventing the leaking of the roof of a house at the point where the chimney passes therethrough.
A further object of the invention is the arrangement of an improved base formed of a contour to fit the ridge of a roof without changing the roof, and designed to have part projecting through the roof for engaging the lower part of the chimney, and part projecting above the roof for engaging or receiving the upper part of the chimney.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, a single block is cast of concrete or constructed in any desired manner, arranged with a projecting lower portion for engaging the interior part of the chimney, and an upper squared portion for engaging the exterior part of the chimney. Radiating from the upper part of the block is a substantially circumferential flange which defines a pair of overhanging members designed to thoroughly protect the opening in the roof through which the reduced part projects.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention shown applied, part of the chimney and part of the roof being shown in connection therewith; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 3 on the line 22; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the base shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a roof of any desired kind, having the usual overlapping projection 2. Arranged interiorly of the house is a chimney 3 which is in line with the base 4; and which supports the base 4. Arranged above the chimney 3, and resting on the top squared portion 5 of the base 4,

is an outer or exterior chimney 6. The chimneys 3 and 6 and the base 1 constitute a single chimney, but for the purpose of description these will be designated as separate chimneys.
The base 4: is formed with a reduced portion 7 for resting on the chimney 3. The reduced portion 7 is formed with an aperture 8 which extends upwardly and through the entire base 4 and registers with a similar aperture in the chimneys 3 and 6. The upper part of the base 1 is formed with a circumferential flange 9, which when cast in the shape of the roof 1 defines flanges 10 and 11 which rest against the roof so that the base 4 is supported partially by the roof 1 and partially by the chimney 3, preferably the major portion of the weight being taken up by the chimney 3. The overhanging portions 10 and 11 are formed with beveled or inclined faces 12 and 13 which merge into overhanging cuts or eaves 1 1 and 15. The face 13 is extended upwardly into the body of the base 4 for forming a groove 16 which accommodates the overlapping projection 2. By this construction and arrangement the base is locked in a certain sense against removal and by reason of the circumferential flange 9 the chimney opening in the roof 1 is thoroughly covered and protected.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A base for chimneys formed with a body portion provided with a base, a reduced lower extension provided with a bore merging into the bore of the body portion and forming a continuation thereof, a beveled extension formed entirely around the body portion and overhanging the lower reduced extension, the under surface of the beveled extension forming upwardly converging planes, one of said planes merging into a groove formed in the face of the other plane at the juncture of the planes for accommodating the overhanging projection of a roof.
