To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT O. BINGI-IAM, a resident of Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Sausage- Stuflers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hand presses for expressing fruit juices, lard, or the like, the same by a slight change being adapted for use as a sausage stuffer.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus, with a small numberof necessary parts, for the uses named, and like uses, whereby with practically one apparatus two difierent operations can be performed.

The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention and forms part of the specification ;F igure 1 is a vertical section of the device arranged for pressing fruit; Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively plan and side elevation of a hand-nut; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the apparatus differently arranged; Fig. 5 is a plan view of an auxiliary base or bottom and its cylinder; Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 5.

Numeral 1 denotes a base, preferably of cast iron, having a circular ring or flange 2, which is made continuous except where it 1s interrupted to accommodate an open exit channel 3 for passage of expressed fruitjuiccs, or the like. Within flange 2 is a bottom, preferably flat a little inward from the flange, as shown at 4, and the rest quite convex. At the center of this bot-tom is secured a long pressure screw 5. I

For use with base 1 for pressing material to separate a liquid portion from a residue, an open ended imperforate cylinder 6 is pressed tightly into the ring of the base, 110 other fastening being necessary. A smaller perforated cylinder 7 is placed within the larger cylinder and rests on the flat part of the bottom adjacent the central convex part. A space 8 is thus left between the cylinders which communicates with the exit.

Adapted to fit loosely on the screw so asto slide thereon is a convex pressure plate or Specification of Letters Patent.

plunger 9 having a hollow sleeve 10 extending above the top of the cylinders. Above sleeve 10 on the screw is a nut with handles whereby the nut can be turned to give pressure. After each use it is necessary to raise the plunger. That this may be done readily, I make said nut in sections, one section secured to each handle, and hinged together at 11. One section has a lug l2, and the other section has a pivoted latch 13 adapted to engage said lug to hold the nut in engagement; or to be disengaged from said lug to free the nut, whereby screwing it back to the top is avoided.

In order to press material all of which is to be ejected in a considerable stream, such as 1n stuffing sausage, the cylinders 6, 7 are removed, and an imperforate cylinder 14, of the same size as cylinder 7, is provided. This is mounted on an auxiliary bottom which rests on the main bottom, and whicli has edge legs which stand on the flange 2.

This auxiliary bottom comprises a narrow rim 15, and floor 16 the general contour of which is convex, except that just within the rim is a narrow flat part adapted to receive an end of the cylinder 14, and on opposite sides of and partly surrounding the central hole are depressions 17 which unite and extend to the tubular outlet 18, at one edge of the rim and bottom, and extending below the rim. This depressed outlet spout, when the auxiliary bottom is on the base, rests in the open spout 3 and is thereby kept from turning. The part 19 of the auxiliary bottom opposite the screw hole from the outlet is left at full height and separates the depressions on different sides. The described construction of bottom and outlet are found to be very effective. It is not always essential to retain the part 19 at full height since some of the advantages of operation would remain should depressions l7 join around the screw hole.

To the outlet 18 is fixed a funnel like spout of suitable length for its purpose. The rim at some convenient point, as at the outlet, is formed with an overhanging lug 20, under which the bead at the bottom of cylinder 14 when in place extends, and opposite lug 20 is a post supporting a finger screw 21 whereby by a turn or two of a single screw the cylinder can be either secured or freed.

It will be noted that in both described arrangements the same base, screw and plunger are utilized.

During storage or transportation the cylinder 14 may be placed on screw 5 above cylinders 6, 7, with its bottom resting on sleeve 10.

I-Iaving described the invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is;

1. In a press, the combination with a main base comprising a flange and an open depressed outlet channel, and along screw secured at the center of said main base, of an auxiliary base having means for supporting it on the main base and having a central opening to fit over said screw, a plunger and nut on said screw above the auxiliary base, said base comprising a con vex central portion with a groove leading from the high part of the convex portion to a depressed outlet spout extending beyond and through the outlet channel of the main base, and said spout.

2. The combination with a press base having a peripheral flange, and an'open outlet spout, a screw secured at the center of the base, ofan auxiliary base adapted to be supported on the first base and havin a tubular outlet spout which is adapted to pass through said open outlet, a cylinder on the auxiliary base, a plunger, and a hand nut.

3. The combination with abase and screw,

of an auxiliary base comprising a bottom with a central hole adapted to fit over said screw, and a peripheral rim, a cylinder in said rim, and securingmeans comprising an overhanging part at one side of the rim, and a screw at another side adaptedto engage the cylinder. at. In a press, an auxiliary base having a peripheral rim, a depressed tubular outlet and a bottom the general contour of which is convex, there being curved depressions in the convex part extending to said depressed tubular outlet.
