To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrii SCHMITTBER- GER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at West Hoboke'n, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to .make and use the same.
This invention relates to window sash locks, and the object thereof 'is to provide an improved device of this class which is automatic in the operation of locking the sashes together when the said sashes arev moved into their closed position, a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is simple in construction and operation, easily applied, and easily manipulated. With these and other objects in view the invention is constructed and operates as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved sash lock ;-Fig. 2 a side view thereof ;Fig.
'3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
showing the device in use, and ;Fig. 4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification I have shown at a the bottom part of the sash of a window having the usual bottom rail a and at b the top part of the bottom sash of a window having the usual top rail 6 In the Ipractice of my invention I provide a sas lock comprising a part c adapted to be secured to the bottom rail a of the top sash, and a part d adapted to be secured to the top rail of the bottom sash, all as shown in Fig. 3. The parts 0 and d taken together form a hollow truncated cone, and the part 0 is provided with a transverse rod 0 and mounted in the back portion of the part (Z and centrally thereof is a spur wheel ehaving curved hook-shaped teeth 0 all of which extend in the same direction, and these teeth, in the operation of the device, are adapted to engage the rod 0 as shown in Fig.- 3', and lock the sashes together.
In the top of the part- 0! is a radial slot 01 over which is pivoted as shown at d a handle lever f having a radially directed handle head 3 and provided with a finger f which extends downwardly through the slot d and the end of which is adapted to bear on the curved surface of oneof the teeth (2 of the wheel 0 as shown in Fig. 3, while the next adjacent tooth is adapted to bear on the back of said finger, and secured in the front bottom portion of the part (l' isa spring g which bears on the front side of said finger as shown in said figure ofthe,

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing descriptiiin when taken. .in connection wlth the accompanying drawing, and thefollowing statement: Suppose the bottom sash to be in a raised position, and'it being desired to close the sashes and lock them together, the bottom sash is moved downwardly, and in this operation the top front edge of the part c of the device strikes the back curved surface of one of the teeth 6 of the wheel e, and the said wheel is turned to the right until the sashes assume the position shown in Fig. 3, in
which position the next succeeding tooth engages the rod 0 as shown in said figure and the sashes are locked together, and by forcing the head of the lever f downwardly into the position shown in said figure the sashes will be drawn tightly together at the top, this operation being occasioned by the end of the finger f of the lever f pressing on one of the teeth 6 of the'wheel 6. And when it is desired to unlock the sashes the head f of the lever f is raised, and the top sash may be lowered, or the bottom sash raised as will be readily understood.
It will be understood that the sashes may be locked together either by raising the upper sash or by lowering the bottom sash, and at the end of either of these operations the position of the lever f is that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. and in order to lock the parts and draw the sashes together the said lever is drawn down into the position shown in full lines in said figure, but the spring g may be made strong enough to hold the lever f in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, under normal conditions, in which the entire operation of locking and drawingthe sashes together would be automatic, but in order to unlock the sashes so as to permit of the downward movement of the upper sash, or the upward movement of the lower sash, the lever f must be raised I after which the movement of either of the sashes will rotate the wheel e and release the lock.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A sash lock comprising a hollow casing composed of two parts one of which is adapted to be secured to the bottom rail of the top sash and the other to the top rail of the bottom sash, the partwhich is adapt ed to be secured to the bottom rail of the top sash being provided with a transverse rod, and the part which is adapted to be secured to the top rail of the bottom sash being provided with a spur wheel mounted in a plane transversely of said rod and provided with hook shaped teeth which operate in connection with said rod and aspring operated lever' mounted in the top of the last named part and provided with a downwardl directedfinger adapted to bear on the bac s of said teeth.
