@wat @Win12,
JOHIEL JACKSON, 0F COLUMBUSf WISCONSI.
Leners Patent "1%. 103,620, dated May 31,- 1870.
Moc- IMPROVMENT IN'` SEAT-HOLDER.
. The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J QHIEL J AcKsoN, o'f Columbus, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and -useful Improvemeutin Seat- Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable 'others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a top view of my improved seat-holder, represented as holding the bac-kand en d rails of a seat.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same. Similar letters of reference indica-te corresponding parts.
My invention hasfor its object to furnish an improved holder for holding the rails of a seat while .being made, and which may be adjusted for holding larger' or smaller' seats, as may be required; and
Itconsists in the construction and combinationof the various parts of the holder, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the foundation frame of the holder, consisting of two longitudinal bars, connected to each other near their ends by short cross-bars, as shown in tigrl'.
`B are arms tted into notches in the npper'sides of the longitudinal bars of the frame A, the forward ends of which are passed beneath staples C driven into the said longitudinal bars of the i'ame A, and are secured to said staples C by the spring catches D, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
To the rear ends of the bars B are attached U- shaped arms E, having cam-levers'll pivoted to their outer ends, and having spring plates G attached to Athem to rest against the outerA side of the seat-back,
for the cams F to operate against, to prevent the said cams from injuring the surface of' said seat-back.
H are the end arms or barswhich extend along the inner vsidesof the end parts of the longitudinal bars ofthe frame A, with which they are connected by a' pin or pins attached tothe said bars A or H, and which enter holes in the vother of said bars, several holes being formed in the said bars for the said pins, so that the holder may be extended or contracted to adjust it forholding larger or smaller seats.
The bars H arel secured in place by the blocks I, which t intothe space between the bars H, and the inner ends of which are hinged to the cross-barsro'f the frame A, so that. they may be turnedback, when desired, to release the bars H to allow them to be adjusted or detached.
To the outer ends of the bars H are attached U- shaped arms lil, provided with lever-cams Fand elastic plates G, said arms and their attachment being similar in every respect to those attached vto the bars B.
In using the machine, it is secured in the bench-vise bottom upward, and with the back arms toward the operator. ,The end rails are then placed and clamped in the end arms, and the back rail is placed and clamped in the back arms., The mit-er corners are now sawed down and nailed fast, and the lower edge of theY rails dressed oft". The seat-bottom is then placed upon the lower edges of Athe seat rails, marked around, turned over, and secured to the holder by thumb-screws, and
its edges are dressed ol. The thumb-screws are now loosened, the bottom turned over and secured in place. The holder and seat are now turned top upward and secured in the vise, the back arms are detached, and 4the top edge dressed asfar as the end arms will permit. The back arms are then replaced, the end arms removed, and the dressing completed. The back arms are then loosened, and the. completed seat removed.
The holder may be used with equal-advan tage when making round-cornered seats.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved seat-holder, formed by the combina-- tion ofthe frame A, detachable rear arms B E F G, secured in place by spring catches D, or equivalent, detachable and adjustable end arms H E F G, and
hinged blocks I, 'with each other, said parts being cons'tructed and operating substantially as herein shown anddescribed, and for the purpose set forth.
