JACOB Mo LnT, or LIBERTY, MISSOURI.
- VISE FOR HOLDING SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Latte 1'5 Patent N0. 224,211, dated February 3, 1880,
' Application filed July 2, 1879. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownv that I, JACOB MOLLET, of Liberty, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, hay'e invented a new and useful Improvement in Vises for Holding Saws, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a frontview of my improved vise. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line m, Fig. 1. Fig; 4 is a detail top view of one of the socket-blocks.
Similar letters of reference indicatecorrestructed that the whole of one side of a saw can be tiled without moving the saw, and
which may be used for holding handsaws, crosscut-saws, and circular saws with equal facility. I
The invention. consists in the combination of the two long standards provided with the shoulders, the two short standards provided with the cross-bar, the two springs, the two jaws, the bar attached to the jaw and connected with the long standards by two crossbars, the outwardly '-inclined slotted bar attached to the other jaw, the cam-lever, the hinged lever, and the three bolts with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A are two standards, the lower ends of which have tenons formed upon them to enter the holes formed in two socket-blocks, B, attached to the floor in the place where the vise is to be used. The upper parts of the standards A are halved to form shoulders a. for the crossbar 0 to rest upon, and upon which the said cross-bar is secured by springs D, attached to the forward sides of the standards A.
To the cross-barG are attached the lower ends of two standards, E, which are placed directly opposite the standards A.
F G are the jaws of the vise, which are made of wood, and may be of any desired length. The jaw F is attached to the upper ends of the two standards A, and the jaw G is attached to the upper ends of the two standardsvE. To the middle part of the jaw F is attachedthe upper end of a bar, H.
To the bar H, at a little distance from its upper and lower ends, are attached the centers of two bars, I J, the ends of which are attached to the standards A.
To the middle part of the jaw G is attached the upper end of a bar, K, which inclines outwardand has a slotformed in its lower end to receive the lever-cam L. The levercani L is pivoted to the bar K, and its face rests against the outer side of the upper end of the lever M.
The leverM, near its lower end, is hinged,by
a pin or other suitable means, to the rounded lower end of the bar H, and its lower end rests against the side of the crossbar G.
The two pairs of standards A E and the two bars H K are connected by the three bolts N, to prevent the jaws F G from opening too far. Upon the bolts N, between the standards A E, are placed blocks 0, of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, to prevent the said standards from having too much play.
With this construction, by moving the bandle of the lever-cam L upward the jaw G will be moved away from jaw F, so that the saw can be readily put in and taken out, and by lowering the handle of the said lever-cam L the jaw G will be pressed against jaw F, so as to hold the saw securely. The bar I has holes formed in it to receive screws for securing the vise to the edge of a bench,'windowsill, or other support while being used.
The jaws F G may be made of such a length that the whole of one side of the saw may be filed without moving the said saw, and being made of wood. they willhold a circular saw while being filed without injuring its teeth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 The improved vise for holding saws, consisting of the two long standards A, provided with the shoulders at, the two short standards E, provided with'the cross-bar O, the
two springs D, the two jaws F G, the bar H, attached to the jaw F, and connected with the standards A by the two cross-bars I J,
J AGOB MOLLET.
