T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY DE SMITH and DENNIS CHURCH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoX-Form-Attaching Means for BoXCovering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to box-covering machines and has particular reference to'the means for securing the box-form in detachable connection with the rotary carrier-spindle forming part of such machines.
In the use of box-covering machines, boxforms of various shapes and sizes are usually employed according to the shape and size of the boxes to be covered, and it is therefore desirable that a simple and effective means be provided by which these various boxforms may be quickly and conveniently attached to and detached from the rotary carrier-spindle of the box-covering machine.
To provide such a means has been the obj ect of our invention.
In carrying the invention into effect we combine with the carrier-spindle a plurality of opposing clamping jaws one'or more of which is carried by an adjustable part, and means for adjusting one or more of said jaws to cause them to cooperate in clamping a box-form in operative connection with the carrier-spindle.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,-Fig ure 1 represents one end of the rotary carrierspindle of a box-covering machine provided with a box-form attaching means embodying our invention, and also showing said attaching means in operative clamping engagement with a box-form, a part only of which latter is shown. Fig. 2 is a View of the same looking from either the top or bottom as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the invention.

In the particular embodiment of our invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rotary carrier-spindle, indicated at 2, is provided at its front end with a collar 3 having at opposite sides thereof two pairs of ears H,
44, between and to which are pivotally connected two levers 5, 5. These levers, which are pivoted as described at a point intermediate their ends, are arranged longitudinally of the carrier-spindle with their forward ends projecting beyond the adjacent end of the carrier-spindle to provide opposing jaws for engaging and clamping therebetween a suitable cooperating part of a box-form. In the present case, the said proecting ends of the levers 5, 5, are provided with pivoted jaws 6, 6, which are self-adjusting to conform to the shape of the cooperating part of the box-form, which in the present case is shown as a dove-tailed projection 7 this form of projection being desirable in that the clamping action of the opposing jaws on its angular surfaces operates to draw and hold the form in close and firm contact with the end of the carrierspindle or with the enlarged flanged face of the collar 3 thereon.
As a means for operating the levers 5, 5, to move and hold their clamping jaws in operative clamping engagement with the box-form, we have located a cone 8 on the carrier-spindle for longitudinal adjustment thereon whereby it may be moved into engagement with the adjacent rear ends of the levers 5, 5, and rock said levers on their pivots in a manner to move the clamping aws at the forward ends of the levers in a direction toward each other and into operative clamping engagement with the cooperating art of the box-form as shown. In order to' detach the box-form from connection with the carrier-spindle it is only necessary to move the adjusting cone in the proper direction to release the levers from their clamping position.
The cone 8 may be adapted for adjustment on the carrier-spindle by any suitable means, the same in the present case having a screwthreaded connection with a sleeve 9 on said carrier-spindle for longitudinal adjustment thereon and being adapted to be secured in adjusted position by means ofv a jam nut 10. In the present case the said cone 8 and jam nut 10 are each shown as being provided with a series of peripheral teeth or rojections 11 for the engagement therewit of a spanner or other suitable operating wrench, by means of which the adjustment of said parts may be facilitated.
Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawing, we have shown therein another embodiment of our invention, which differs from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in that one of the clamping jaws (the lower one as shown in the drawing) is carried by a fixed arm 12 of the collar 3 instead of by an adjustable one. In such case the operation of the device in effecting clamping engagement with a box-form is consequently accomplished by the adjustment of but one aw, the adjustably supported one, as shown. It is thus seen that the jaws 6 both in the preferred and modlfied structures are contracted to approach one another and clamp against the .oppositesides of the dove-tailed projection 7' whether one or both of the jaws (3 are moved inward relatively to the spindle 2.
While we have shown and described differ ent embodiments of our invention, we do not wish to be understood as confining ourselves to the details of construction which we have disclosed, for it 'is obvious that considerable latitude within the skill of a mechanioian may beindulged in without departing from the principles of our invention, and as all rier-spindle for engaging the rear or opposite ends of the levers to move and secure the levers in operative clamping position.
2. Box-form attaching means for box-covering machines, comprising a carrier-spindle having a threaded portion, a collar mounted on said spindle having projecting ears, a plurality of levers pivotally connected at a point intermediate their ends to said ears and having at their front ends pivoted clamping jaws, an adjusting cone threaded onto said screw-threaded portion of the carrier-spindle for engaging the rear or opposite ends of the levers to move and secure the levers in operative clamping position, and a jamnut for engaging the cone to secure it in adjusted position.
3. Boxform attaching means for boxcovering machines, comprising a carrier-spindle having a screw-threaded portion, a clamping means pivotally connected to said spindle and extending longitudinally thereof and adapted for engagement at its front end with a box-form, an adjusting cone threaded on said screw-threaded portion of the spindle and engaging the rear end of said clamping means to bind the front end thereof against the box-form, and a am-nut threaded on the threaded portion of the spindle rearwardly of the cone to hold the latter against said clamping means.
