COPYING-IRON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
Application filed April 28, 1910. Serial No. 558,252.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. TONGUE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cedarville, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copying-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to the subject of transferring pictures to a blank sheet, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel tool which is provided with a rubbing surface adapted to be heated to facilitate the transfer of a picture.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein the figure is a perspective view of the improved transferring tool.
Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the improved tool which is of steel or other suitable metal, one end portion of which terminates in an upwardly and outwardly curved shank 2 which is provided with a hand rip 3. The other end of said body is provided with an enlarged head A which terminates in a tapering point 5 the upper surface 6 and the lower surface 7 of which are fiat. The base 8 of the head 4 is straight and flat. Adjacent the junction of body 1 and shank 2, a pendent rest lug 9 is provided the fiat base of which is in the same plane as the base 8 of head 4 so that the tool may be rested on a stove or other suitable source of heat and supported by said lug and the base of head A to permit the head to be heated, yet retain the handle or handgrip 3 a suiticient distance from the source ofheat so that said handle or handgrip will not become heated.
In use, the tool is heated as described above, and the picture to be transferred is placed face down on the picture-receiving sheet, and by rubbing the heated portion of the tool over the picture, the said picture is quickly and clearly transferred to said receiving sheet.
As will be obvious the improved tool provides simple means whereby the subject of picture transferring may be performed in an entertaining and instructive manner.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture, a copying iron comprising a curved body, an enlarged tapered head formed at one end of said body and provided with a flat bottom surface, a supporting heel formed intermediate the length of said body and having its bearing surface in the same plane as the bottom surface of said head, and a handle secured to the opposite end of said body from said head and upon a higher plane than said head, said handle having its axis in direction substantially to intersect the supporting heel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK H. TONGUE.
Witnesses:
HARBERT O. NEwooMB, DAVID P. MILFORD.
