invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter'fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction withinthe scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Associated with the casing is a cover plate 29, and this cover is formed with a key opening 30 which is disposed at a point in close proximity to the key sweeps16, so that upon the insertion and rotation of a key 31, the talons 17 will be successively engaged to slide the lock bolt 11 outwardly in a step by stepmovement. It will be observed in this connection that there is preferablyshown a pair of sweeps 16, and a pair of talons 17 Thus a will e obvious that inorder to extend 1 the bolt 11 to its limit, two manipulations or rotationsof the key will be necessary. '.The keysweep 16 which is farthest away 3 from the head 10 of the bolt is elongate fl so that whenthe bolt is disposed in its operative or extended position, the reverse ro tation of the key will not engage any sweep, and therefore the bolt will normally be locked by means of the tumbler againstre' turn movement. In order, therefore, to unlock the bolt or in other words .to return the same to its inoperative or initial position, the following mechanism is employed: Secured to the lower rear. end of the shanki 12'of the bolt is a mounted upon this pm is a forwardly exf pin 32, and pivotally tending pawl 33, The forward end of this pawl, forms 'a resultant talon 34, and this pawl is normally urged to swing down- I wardly upon the pin 32' so that the talon 34 will be disposed in the "path of the key 31 by means of'a flat spring 35 which has one end fixed to a post 36 carried by the bolt 11. In order to limit the downward movement of the pawl 33, there is provided a pin 37 which is carried by the bolt below the pivot pin 32.
In order to normally-hold the pawl 33 out of the path of the key 31, said pawlis centrally formed with anopening 38 which registers with an opening 39 formed in the cover" 29. A spring arm 40 is fixedly secured, as at 41', to the cover 29, and is disposed atone side of the key opening 30.
The upper end of this arm is reduced to form an inwardly extending pin 42 which is normally disposed within the openings 38 and 39 above described. It will thus be observed that by means of this spring arm the pawl 33 is normally held out of the path of the key.- Inorder, however, to release the pawl so that the spring 35 may urge the same into the path of the key so that the latter may engage the talon34 of said pawl to return the bolt to its initial position, the following mechanism is employed: A key cylinder 43 projects later-- ally from the cover 29, and is secured to said cover by means of attaching feet 44 I and 45 respectively, said feet being secured to the cover by bolts 46 or other suitable fastening means. The cylinder 43 registers der 43 for rotation therein, and the forward end of the inner cylinder projects beyond however, being of less width than the slot 147 of the outer cylinder. p is adapted upon rotation of the inner eylinder 49 in one direction to be forced under thefree end of the spring 40, and thereby withdraw the pin 42 from the opening 38 6 of the pawl 33, and thereby permit of the spring 35 to force said pawl downwardly into the path of movement of the key 31.
In order to actuate the inner cylinder by means of the key, said key is first drawn outwardly from engagement with the bolt 11, p and is then given a slight twist to-the right,
the head of the key thus engaging the respective edge of the slot 50 and thereby causing the 1nner cylinder to be rotated until said edge is flush with the respective edge of the slot 47 of the'outer cylinder. -W hen the inner cylinder has assumed this position, the point 52 of the cam finger 51 will have shifted the spring arm 40 to release the pawl a 33 as above described. The operator then returns the key to its operative position, and
upon rotation thereof, the head of the key will be caused to engage the talon 34 of the pawl 33, and as a result, will shift the lock bolt 11 rearwardly for one step, and upon the next rotation of the key the respective talon 17 will be engaged to further return the bolt. It will be understood that as soon as the operator turns the key to the left, the head of said key will engage the pawl and raise the same to such a position as to permit of the pin 42 to be forced thereinto by means of the sprin arm 40.
What is claimed is: I 1.
