TRANSOM-LIFT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GRANT \V. MoCAR'rY and DAVID F. HARNESS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Transom-Lifts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in transom lifts, and has for its object, the provision of a simple, inexpensive, easily installed device of the character specified, by means of which the transom may be swung into any desired position and so held, and having automatically acting means for preventing accidental movement of the transom.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section on the line l1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of a part of a door having a transom provided with the improvement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front view of the holding plate for the operating rod, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged partial end view of the transom. Fig. 6 is a front view of Fig. 5, with parts in section, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the latch. v
In the present embodiment of the invention, the transom l is of any usual or de sired construction, and is arranged in the usual opening or frame 2, in the door casing or frame 3, above the door 4. The casing is hollow at the sides, a longitudinal chamher 5 being formed at each side of the door.
The transom l is connected to the upper or lower side of the opening or frame for the transom by hinges, each of which is composed of two leaves 6 and 7. The leaf 7 is seated in a countersink in the inner face of the upper or lower cross piece 8 of the door frame, and is held to the cross piece by screws 9. The leaf 6 of each hinge is seated on the outer face of the transom frame, and is secured to the frame by screws 10, and there are preferably a number of screws, so that the said leaf may be firmly held to the transom. One of the hinges has connected thereto the operating mechanism for the transom, in the present instance the hinge at the left of the door. The leaf 6 of the said hinge is provided with two bearing lugs 11, spaced apart from Specification of Letters Patent.

each other, for receiving between them a single bearing lug 12 on leaf 7. A screw rod 13 passes through the inner lug 11 of leaf 6 and lug 12 of leaf 7, and is threaded into the outer lug, as shown in Fig. 6. The other hinge is preferably constructed in the same manner.
A crank arm 14; extends laterally outward from the outer lug 11 of leaf (5, and the crank 15 of the arm extends upwardly and inwardly, into the chamber 5 formed within the side piece of the door casing. A rod or link 16 is connected at one end to the crank, by means of an eye 17 on the rod or link, engaging the crank arm, and held in place by a cotter pin 18. The rod extends downwardly and forwardly in the chamber, and the lower end passes out forwardly through an opening 19 in the side member of the casing. At the upper end of the said opening, the front plate of the door casing is beveled on its inner face, to receive the rod.
A plate 20 is secured over the opening on the outer face of the casing, by means of screws 20, and the said plate is recessed on its inner face to form a housing 21, U- shaped in cross section, and gradually increasing in height from above downward, and a box housing 22 rectangular in cross section, at the lower end of housing 21. The lower end of housing 22 is provided with an opening for the passage of the rod. The lower end of the rod is thus brought out of the chamber, so that it may be manipulated to operate the transom. The housings 21 and 22 of the plate are so arranged as to fit the incline of the rod. IVithin the housing 22 the rod or link passes through an opening 23 in a latch plate 2 1, shown in Fig. 7.
The latch plate fits at its inner end in a groove 25, in a rib 26 arranged transversely of one side of the housing 22, and the opposite end of the latch plate is reduced to form a handle 27, which extends through a slot 28 in the side of the housing 22. The shoulders 29 on the plate, between the reduced portion and the main portion, engage the side of the housing at the sides of the slot, to hold the plate in place, and the slot is inclined outwardly toward its lower end, and is approximately parallel with the rod.
The lower end of rod 16 is bent to form a finger piece 30, and the said finger piece curves outwardly toward its lower end. vA. weight 31 of ordinary construction is cast on or otherwise secured to the rod, to bal ance the transom, in order to prevent the too rapid closing of the same.
In operation, when it is desired to operate the transom, the latch plate 24 is held in horizontal position by one hand, while the other grasps the finger piece 30. When the plate is so held, the rod may move freely through the opening 23, which is of some what greater diameter than the rod. VVher the transom is adjusted to proper position, the plate 2a is released, and the weight of the parts causes it to take an inclined posi tion with respect to the rod, so that the edges of the opening bind on the rod and prevent it from moving longitudinally. The transom may then be held in any desired position. The free end of the latch plate is limited in its swinging movement by the rod, and by the ends of the slot.
We claim,
1. In a door casing, the combination with the frame, of a transom hinged at its upper edge to the frame, one of the hinges having a laterally extending crank arm, the crank 0f the arm extending rearwardly and upwardly into the side member of the casing, a rod engaging the crank at one end, th side member of the casing having an opening through which the lower end of the rod passes, a housing plate secured over the opening, the housingof the plate gradually increasing in height from above downward and having an opening in its lower end for the passage of the rod, and releasable. means in the housing for engaging the same to prevent longitudinal movement thereof, said means comprising a latch plate having a transverse opening for the rod, the housing having a transverse groove in one side wall in which one end of the plate rests, and having a slot in the opposite side wall, the plate having a handle extending through the slot, and the rod having a finger piece at its lower end. i
2. In a door casing, the combination with the frame, of a transom hinged at its upper edge to the frame, one of the hinges having a laterally extending crank arm, the crank of the arm extending rearwardly and upwardly into the side member of the casing, a rod engaging the crank at one end, the side member of the casing having an open-- ing through which the lower end of the rod passes, a housing plate secured over the opening, the housing of the plate gradually increasing in height from above downward and having an opening in its lower end for the passage of the rod, and releasable means in the housing for engaging the same to prevent longitudinal movement thereof.
3. In a door casing, the combination with the frame, of a transom hinged at its upper edge to the frame, one of the hinges having a laterally extending crank arm, the crank of the arm extending rearwardly and upwardly into the side member of the easing, a rod engaging the crank at one end, the side member of the casing having an opening through which the lower end of the rod passes, a housing plate secured over the opening, the housing of the plate having an opening for the rod at its lower end, and a latch plate in the housing and having an opening for the rod and mounted at one end to swing into inclined position with re spect to the rod to hold the same, the housing having a slot and the plate a handle piece passing through the slot.
4. In a door casing, the combination with the frame, of a transom hinged at its upper edge to the frame, one of the hinges having a laterally extending crank arm, the crank of the arm extending rearwardly and upwardly into the side member of the casing, a rod engaging the crank at one end, the side member of the casing having an open ing through which the lower end of the rod passes, a housing plate secured over the opening, the housing of the plate having an opening at its lower end for the rod, and releasable means in the housing for clamping the rod to hold the same.
5. In combination with the door casing and the transom hinged thereto, of means for operating the transom, said means comprising a crank arm on the transom, a rod connected at one end to the crank arm, and releasable means for engaging the rod to hold the same from the longitudinal movement, said means comprising a housing through which the rod extends, a latch plate in the housing having an opening through which the rod slides, the housing having a groove at one side for engagement by one end of the plate, and a slot at the opposite side, the plate having a handle extending through the slot.
