' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS DEVLIN AND LOUIS J.
MOGRATH; AND WVILLIAM K. BROWN AND OATHARINE A. MCGRATII EXECUTORS OF WILLIAM V. MCGRATH,
DECEASED.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,486, dated January 5,1892.
3 Application filed December 29, 1890- Serial No. 376,031. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH R. BUEHLER,
'a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to transom-lifters and it consists of an improvement in the connecting mechanism between the lifting-arm and the sash. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of a transom-lifter containing my improvement in position on the window frame and sash. Fig. 2 is a detached side View of a liftingarm, the arm secured to the sash, and showing the novel means of connecting the two. Fig. 3 is a like view of the said parts separated from each other to show more clearly their construction in detail.
The design of the invention is to so construct the lifting-arm and the bracket on the transom and to connect the same together in such a manner that the two parts, while removable from each other, cannot when arranged on the completed transom-lifter and sash be disconnected in any part of the are described by the sash or transom when op erated by the liftingarm attached to the usual operating-arm, and also that the said transom-bracket shall be reversible-that is, adapted to be fitted to either side of the sash and to the top or bottom thereof, depending upon whether the transom is to open upward or downward.
In the said drawings, A represents the transom-sash, which is shown hinged at its lower edge.
B is the lifting-arm, and O the operatingrod. The latter may be secured in position by any well-known means; but in the drawings is shown as passing through guides D and through a locking device E at its lower end. These several devices need not be described in detail, as my invention relates simply to the lifting-arm and the sash-bracket.
The sash-bracket is constructed, as shown in Fi s. 2 and 3 of arms F and G at right angles to each other, G having a base-plate with screw-holes to enable the bracket to be secured to the sash and F being provided at its extreme end with screw-thread. The lifting-arm Bis a straight arm, which may be secured'at one end to the operating-rod by any well-known means, but in the drawings, as shown, is secured thereto by a pivot-joint at L. The other and lower end of the liftingrod is provided with a flattened head M, recessed laterally, and with a screw-thread on the interior of the recess corresponding 'with the screw-thread on the end of the arm F of the sash-bracket. WVhen the parts are put together, it will be readily seen that this form of sash-bracket may be placed on either side of the sash and that the action of the liftingarm on the end F of the bracket is such that the screw-joint between the two will allow the bracket to have easy and yet full and ample play, as the are described by the sash in its movement is never morethan a quarter of a circle, and this means of connection between the two parts mentioned is such as to hold them much more steady in movement than any other present known means.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In-a transom-lifter, the combination, with a lifting-rod, of a sash-bracket constructed of parts F and G at right angles to each other, the partF being provided with a screw-threaded end, and a lifting-arm having a recessed screw-threaded head M, adapted to be applied to said arm F, said parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 4th day of December, A. D. 1890.
H. T. FENTON, C. IV. BECK.
