Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 11, 1911. Serial No. 653,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DILLON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in transom lifts, having for its object, among other things, to provide such a device that may be used interchangeably upon a transom hinged either at the top or bottom, and lock the transom when in its closed position.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the transom lift, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved transom lift; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the transom plate and extension bar; and Fig. 4 is plan View of the locking block.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a rod 1, having a finger piece 2 at its lower end and slidable in the retaining block 3 and locking block 4, and having fixed thereto the yoke blocks 5 and 5. Pivotally secured within either of said yoke blocks, by a screw 6, is the rod 7 that is adjustable within the arm 8, and secured in its adjusted positions by the screw 18. The arm 8 is provided with laterally projecting looking wings 9, upon either side thereof, and connected with the transom plate 10 by the extension rod 11, which is secured in any of its adjusted positions within said transom plate by the screw 12, and the outer end of which passes through the head 13 and is held against lateral movement therein by the cotter pin 14. The locking block 4: is provided with two wings 15, having notches 16 in the upper and lower elges thereof that are adapted to receive the locking wings 9 when the transom is in its closed position.
In Figs. 1 and 2 my device is shown as secured to a transom in its closed position, in which it will be observed that the looking wings 9 are in the notches 16 upon the underside of the wings 15, the rod 1 being held in its up position by the thumb screw 17 threaded into the retaining block 3. It will be observed that with the parts in this position that it is impossible for the transom to be opened or moved from its closed position from the outside either by pressure or by other means, as the engagement of the locking wings with the notches in the locking plate provide a rigid look. The transom is opened by releasing the thumb screw 17 and moving the rod downwardly, and the open, or substantially open, position of the transom is shown by broken lines in'Fig. 2.
For use upon a transom that is hinged at the top, instead of bottom, the rod 7 is secured to the yoke block 5 instead of the block 5, as shown in the drawings, the operation of the parts being exactly the same as above described, except that the locking wings 9 engage the notches 16 in the upper side of the wings 15.
There are minor changes and alterations that may be made within my invention, an I would therefore have it understood, that I do' not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a transom lift, the combination with one or more fixed blocks; of a rod slidable in said blocks; a transom plate; an arm pivotally secured to said rod at one end and to said transom plate at the other end, having a locking member thereon, one of said blocks being so arranged that the engagement of said locking member therewith will lock said transom when in its closed position.
2. In a transom lift, the combination with one or more fixed blocks, one of said blocks having locking notches therein; of a rod slidable in said blocks; a transom plate;
and an arm pivotally secured to said rod at and an arm pivotally secured to said rod at one end and to said transom plate at the other end, and during its movement passing between said notched wings, said arm having locking wings thereon arranged so as to engage the notches in said wings when the transom is in its closed position.
4. In a transom lift, the combination with one or more fixed blocks; of a rod slidable in said blocks; a transom plate; an arm pivotally securedto said rod at one end and to said transom plate at the other end, having a locking member thereon between the ends thereof; and a fixed member arranged so that the engagement of said locking member therewith will lock said transom when in its closed position.
5. In a transom lift, the combination with a rod; of a yoke block fixed thereto; a second rod; means for pivotally connecting said second rod to said yoke block; an arm adjustably secured to said second rod and having locking wings thereon; a transom plate; an extension rod adjustably secured within said transom plate and having a pivotal connection with said arm; and a fixed member having notches therein for the reception of said locking wings.
