To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, CHARLES Donnnvo, J r., citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to a novel constru tion in a display rack particularly adaptel for displaying and containin packages of seeds or the like,-the object being to provide a rack which at the same time const tutes a shipping receptacle for the .seed packages and which is simple, durable and efficient, and consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claime V In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention: Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a display rack constructed in accordance with my invent-ion. Fig. 2- is a front elevation of the same showing the cover raised. Fig. 3- is a view in front elevation of the removable rack forming a part of the device. I Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing means employed for supporting the cover in the position shown inv Fig. 2-. Fig. -5- is a detail view showing a latch employed for maintaining the cover rigidly in the position shown in Fig. 2-. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail section showing a locking device emplo ed in connection with the drawer in the base of the device. Fig. 7- is a view in side elevation similar to Fig. 1- showing the construction modified by omitting the hinge between the divisions of the upper portion of the device. The object of my invention is to provide a display rack for seed packages, or the like, in which the package will be exposed to view over substantially its entire area, and which may be stocked with packages before shipment to retail dealers thus avoiding the necessity of the latter filling the same and relieving such dealers of all work except to unpack and set up the rack.
The rack comprises the base A consisting preferably of a box open at one end and in which a drawer B 15 received, the latter being adapted to contain packages of seeds or a further stock of any matter which may be displayed in the rack. Said drawer is provided on its exposed wall with a staple C by means of which it may be drawn outwardly and in its bottom is provided with a latch D consisting of a pin having a fiat head, said pin projecting through an openmg in the bottom wall of a cylindrical box E mounted in an opening in the bottom of said drawer. The said pin D is adapted to enter an opening in the bot-tom wall of. the
upper edge with a recess G in each of which the pin H projecting from the side walls of the casing I is adapted to be received, said pins being held against removal from said recesses by means of hooks vJ, the latter being pivotally secured to said plates at one end and receiving the projecting end portions of said pins H. The said casing I is preferably made of sheet metal and is adapted to be disposed at an angle (here shown substantially 60 degrees) to the plane of the upper wall of the box A. The end and side walls of said casing I when in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 are vertically disposed and the bottom wall K thereof is horizontally disposed and is adapted to rest upon the top wall of the box A when the said rack is supported in proper position to display the contents thereof. Contained within said casing A is a rack which consists of a plurality of parallel plates Leach of which is provided at one end with an inclined flange M adapted to rest upon the inclined rear wall of the casing I and at its other end is provided with a flange N extending at right angles thereto downwardly therefrom. Said flanges N are equipped with upwardly extending projections 0 arranged in pairs equi-distantly from each other. Between each pair an inclined strip P of metal is received and secured, said strips constituting connecting means between the several shelves or plates L. The said strips P together with said shelves L are removable from said casing I. A cover Q is pivotally mounted upon said casing I and is provided at its side edges larly equipped with projections 28- pivwith over-turned or U-shaped flanges It in which arms S are adapted to be received.
I11 the instance illustrated, the parts S consist of the arms of a U-shaped member or rod T which is pivotally secured in the uppermost edge of the vertical rear wall of the casing I. The said member T consti' tutes the pivot upon which said cover Q is stitute guides on which saidcover is longitudinally movable. The latter when turned to a "ertical position may dropto the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. -8 and shown in full lines in Fig. 2, its downward movementbeing limited by the stops U disposed in the path of said overturned flanges It and which are engaged by the free ends of the arms S. The said casing is supported in the position shown in Figs. -l, 2, 7 and 8 by means of a U-shaped rod W pivotally secured at the free ends of its arms to the side walls of the casing I and at its middle portion adapted to be sprung into hooks X formed by the free flanges of metal straps Y secured to the rear wall of the box A and which project to overhang the top wall thereof, said flanges being ogee curved. By releasing the said rod W from engagement with said hooks X and releasing the strap V from engagement with the staple C, the casing I may be lowered to the position shown in Fig. 7, the said rod W in that event passing at its middle portion underneath the box as shown in the last-named figure. In-this position the device may readily be crated or wired for purposes of shipment but by reason of the fact that the upper portion of said casing I projects considerably rearwardly from the box Athe form of the device is not as'well adapted for crating and shipment as would be the case were it possible to employ a substantially rectangular crate or box which is more completely filled by the device. Accordingly,- I prefer for purposes of boxing and shipping, to divide the casing I between its ends as shown in Fig. -1, this being effected as follows: The bottom wall and side walls of the casing, are made in two parts respectively. Secured to each of the adjacent portions of the respective parts of the side walls of the casing I is a flange -27. the flanges of adjacent portions overlapping each other and being pivotally secured together by a rivet Z as shown in detail in Fig. -2- or in any other suitable manner. 9. In a display stand, a base, a casing supported thereon, at an incline, a cover pivotally engaged with said casing, a removable rack in said casing equipped with pockets adapted to receive the matter to be displayed, said cover, casing and rack each comprising two members hinged together, the pivots of said respective hinge connections being disposed substantially in axial alinement with each other, and mean on one part of said casing operatively engaging the other part thereof to hold the same against pivotal movement relatively to each other.
10. In a device of the class set forth, a
packet drawer housing, a crate hinged at its lower end to the forward portion of the top of said housing permitting it to be turned down on sald top or inclined upwardly upon said housing, means for supportin said crate in inclined position and a paciiet holder defachably supported in said crate.
11. In a device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination, a packet drawer housing, a crate hin ed at its forward end to the forward portion of the top of said housing permitting it to be turned down or inclined upwardly upon said housing, a brace' for holding said crate in upwardly inclined position upon said housing, a packet holder detachably supported by said crate, a cover for said crate and a hinged connection between said cover and crate permittin said cover to slide on said crate and hang 1n substantially vertical po sition when the latter is in upwardly in clined position.
12. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination. a packet drawer housing, a crate detachably secured to said housing, means for supporting said crate in upwardly inclined position on said housing, a packet holder adapted to be detachahly supported by said crate and a cover for closing said crate, said crate belng formed with substantially vertical side walls when in inclined position between which said packet holder is received.
