LACE- CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 6, 1911.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
Serial No. 637,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lace-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lace cabinets and the like, and an object of this invention is to construct devices of this character, comprising a plurality of compartments in which the lace may be kept to protect the same from any dirt or other foreign matter.
Another object is to provide suitable means to fit within these compartments for holding reels of lace or the like whereby the lace may be readily and quickly wound or unwound Without taking the reel from the same.
A still further object is to simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively cheap in manufacture, durable and efficient in use and which may be readily operated.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of a novel construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved cabinet; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the same, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cabinet showing one of the drawers removed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like references represent like parts, the numeral 1 indicates the cabinet consisting of side walls 2 and end walls 3 which may be made in any suitable or preferred design. This cabinet is divided into a plurality of compartments 4 by means of transverse members 5. The upper compartment is closed by a suitable closure 6 which is hinged as at 7 to one of the side walls 2 and its opposite side is provided with a latch 8. Lace may be kept in this compartment before it is to be placed on the reel in the other display compartments which will be more fully described hereafter.
The front ends of the display compartments are opened and have adapted to slide therein drawers 9 each having a reel 10 mounted therein. Each of these drawers is rectangular in shape and is of less width than the width of the cabinet and consists of side members 11, end members 12 and a bottom 13 and is divided into two sections A and B. The bottom of the section A is greater in length than the side members and is hinged as at 13 to the bottom of the section B. The front end member 14 of the section A of each of the drawers is greater in width than the drawer so as to cover the entire front of each compartment thereby preventing any dust from coming into contact with the lace. A suitable handle 15 is mounted on thefront end 14 for withdrawing the drawers and a suitable sample display plate is also mounted upon the same above the handle 15.
The reels 10 are adapted to carry two different grades of lace and consist of two overlapping members 16 having a swelled central portion which obviously permits a greater amount of lace to be wound on the reel. A shaft 18 extends through recesses 19 formed on the inner face of both of the members 16 and is bent as at 20 forming a suitable crank handle. This shaft is mounted in bearings 21 formed adjacent the side members 11 of the section B. One of these bearings is provided with a slot 21 whereby the reels 10 may be easily removed and a latch 22 which is pivoted to one of the side members is adapted to engage the shaft 18 thereby preventing the removal of the same. The shaft 19 has mounted thereon sleeves 23 which separate the reels from the sides of the drawers which obviously permits the same to rotate freely.
lVhen the drawers are withdrawn from the cabinet the section A falls to a vertical position which will permit the reels 10 free to rotate and by placing the same in a horizontal plane the drawers will be permitted to slide back in the compartments and to make room in each compartment for the crank handle 20, I provide cleats 24 which are mounted on each of the transverse members 5 which obviously space one side of the drawers from the side walls of the cabinet. The transverse members 5 are provided wit-h apertures through which extend depending lugs 25 into each compartment which is adapted to engage stops 26 mounted on each of the drawers to prevent the withdrawal of the drawers from the cabinet,
- but upon raising the lugs from the apertures sired from the reel and when the lace has been exhausted on any of the reels other lace may be taken from the upper storage compartment and wound upon the reels through the medium of the hands 20 without remov ing the same from the drawers.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, I have constructed a device which will perform all of the necessary requirements of such a device and it is to be understood that other minor changes and details of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lace cabinet such as described comprising a plurality of compartments separated by transverse members, rectangular drawers slidably mounted in said compartments, cleats for separating said drawers from one side of the cabinet, the front end of the drawer adapted to close the front end of the compartment, a reel rotatably mounted in each drawer, a handle securedito each of the said reels adapted to fit in said compartments when the drawers are in a closed position, a depending lug formed in each compartment and a. stop formed on the said drawers for engaging said. lugs; substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
2. In a drawer the combination with side members, of a rear end piece interposed between the rear terminals of said side members, a sectional bottom interposed between sald side members, and attached to sald rear end. piece, the forward section of said bottom hinged to the rear sectlonand adapted? to swlng downwardly, and a front carried.
by the swinging section of said bottom adapted to bear against the forward terminals of the side members upon elevating;
the swinging section aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner'of Patents; Washington, D. G.
