SPARK-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 27, 1911.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912. Serial No. 611,253.
This invention relates to an apparatus adapted to be arranged in the interior of any chimney for the puroose of preventing sparks which are carried by the draft in the chimney, from escaping outside.
This spark extinguishing apparatus, which is applicable to all furnaces, steam engines and chimneys,'is more particularly intended for locomotives, portable boilers and inarincboilers, the draft in which is produced by an injection of steam into the chimney.
The extinguishing apparatus forming the subject of this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing showing its application to a locomotive.
At the bottom portion of the chimney a is secured a vertically disposed body I) of cylindrical shape, opening at the top into the chimney a, and at the bottom into the smoke box 0. The body I) is secured to the chimney by ineans of a frusto-conical part (I. In the interior of the body 6 is arranged a hollow nozzle e suitably connected to'the steam pipes f producing draft in the chimney. The hollow nozzle which is stationary is surrounded by blades it connected together by vertical bands 71 forming a proyection or offset. These blades which start from the bottom portion of the nozzle 6, describe about the latter a helical line interrupted by the-otf-sets z and terminate at the upper portion, forming in the interior of the body 6 of the extinguisher a kind of helical path with a constant area, along which must travel the sparks escaping from the furnace. The helical body or screw thus formed, is secured in any desired manner to the interior of the body 6 of the extinguisher, and to the nozzle 6. The number of blades h varies according to the dimensions given to them, and according to the height of the body of the extinguisher. The sparks coming from the furnace, impinge therefore against the first blade h which cools them and then, if not extinguished after having passed the first pro-' jection 2', they meet the second blade where they are extinguished. The sparks which, on contact with the first blades, are not extinguished, follow the helical path in provided between the blades h and the projec-' tions or off-sets i, where they become extin guished on contact with successive blades.
The sparks or cinders are arrested by strik ing against the vertical walls 2', and then fall back on the blades JL and follow 'the path I:
in the opposite direction andfall back into the ash lVhein as in the example illustrated, the extinguisher is applied to a locomotive, the nozzle (2 in the helical body or screw con stituted by the blades 72, is hollow and conncctcd, as already stated, to the steam pipes f. It is therefore possible to produce a draft in the chimney by injecting into the chimney (I, either quantities of steam, or a continuous jet, by means of the nozzle which forms a conduit for injecting steam. A blowing pipe m is shown as extending through the tube sheet and dischargin' into the stack, in a wellknown manner, and this pipe may be used for creating a forced draft when the engine is not using steam... The same would be the case in a portable engine.
The spark extinguishing apparatus canbe made of any dimensions and of any. 'suitable material. the bottom or at any point of theehim'ncy', or in the smoke box.
This device economizes fuel and reduces the choking of the smoke tubes, which results in an economy of labor for cleaning the said tubes.
Claims.
1. In a spark extinguishing device, the combination with a vertically arranged conduit through which the products of combustion past from the bottom upwardly, of a helicallyarranged spiral blade located within the 'oond-uit and substantially in contact with the walls thereof, said blade comprising smooth, cooling sections progressively offset from each other in the d1reetion of the axis of the helix, said sections,
being connected by vertically disposed cinder arresting walls extending parallel with said axis.
2. In a spark arresting device, the combination with a cylindrical conduit through It can be arranged either at which the products of combustion pass, of
