CHARLES FREDRICK CHOUFFET, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Crronrrnr, citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising novelties and more particularly to a device for displaying or advertising different brands of cigars.
The object of the invention is to provide an advertising device including a clock or other motor, the pendulum of which is provided with means for supporting a cigar, so that as the pendulum oscillates, a corresponding movement will be imparted to the supporting means and thus attract atten tion to the particular brand of cigar being displayed.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and acco1npanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an advertising device constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the pendulum, showing the manner of supporting a cigar in posit-ion thereon; Fig. a is a perspective view of the pendulum detached; Fig. 5 is a perspective view looking at the rear side of the face plate and showing the construction of the pocket or case.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The improved advertising device forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a supporting base 5 preferably rectangular in shape, as shown, and to which Specification of Letters Patent.

is rigidly secured a back plate 6. Spaced from the back plate 6, is a front plate 7, preferably in the shape of a cigar, the upper end of said front plate being painted to rep resent the ashes of a partially consumed cigar, and the lower end thereof having stamped, printed or otherwise represented thereon the outline of a human face, the mouth of which is formed by a transverse opening 8 in the front plate, as shown.
Interposed between the plates 6 and 7, is a casing 9, which forms a housing for a clock or other motor (not shown) and also serves to maintain the plates in spaced parallel relation to each other and impart the desired rigidity thereto. Formed on the outer face of the front plate 7, is a clock dial 10, the hands 11 of the clock being movable over the face of the dial in the usual manner.
Depending from the clock 10, is a pendulum 12, preferably inclosed in a metallic casing 13, the metal forming the casing 13 being continued downwardly to produce spaced arms 14 connected by a transverse bar 15, which latter forms a means for supporting a display device, preferably in the form of a cigar 16. The cigar 16 is preferably hollow and is provided at one end thereof with a closure 17 formed of cork or other suitable material.
Projecting laterally from the transverse bar 15, is a pin 17, the piercing point 18 of which is adapted to enter the closure 17, thus to hold the cigar in position on the pendulum, so that as the pendulum oscillates, a corresponding movement will be imparted to the cigar and thus attract attention to the particular brand of cigar being displayed.
Interposed between the plug or closure 17 and the outer face of the bar 15, is a strip of, colored paper, cloth or the like, indicated at 18, which strip moves with the pendulum at the rear of the opening 8 and represents the roof of the mouth. It will here be noted that the pin 17 forms the dual function of supporting the cigar 16 and strip 18, the latter being held from accidental displacement by contact with the flat inner face of the plug 17. If desired, however, the strip 18 may be omitted and a suitable paint or pigment applied directly to said bar to imitate the roof of the mouth. The inner face of the front plate 7 is preferably cut-away at 19 to form a pocketadapted to receive the pendulum 12 and prevent the latter from striking the front plate when the pendulum is tilted by the weight of the display device or cigar 16, as best shown in Fig. of the drawing. The upper and lower Walls of the opening 8 are also preferably serrated to represent teeth 20, as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. Thus it Will be seen that as the pendulum oscillates, the cigar 16 being car ried by the pendulum and projected through the opening 8, will be correspondingly oseillated, so as to attract attention to the goods being exhibited. it will of course be understood tha' the de *ices may be made in diflerent sizes and shapes, and that any other article may be supported. on the pendulum in lieu of a cigar, if desired, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
riaving thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:

An advertising novelty including a front plate having an opening therein, a clock arranged at the rear of the front plate, a pendulum forming a part of the clock, a supporting member depending from the pendulum, a piercing member carried by the supporting member, and a display device extending through the opening in the front plate and engaging the piercing member.
5. An advertising novelty including a front plate having an opening therein, a clocl: arranged at the rear of the front plate,
pendulum forming a part of the clock, s a ed arms depending from the pendulum and connected by a transverse bar, a pin extending laterally from the transverse bar, a tubular display member extending through the opening in the front plate, and a plug forming a closure for one end of the tubular display member and engaging the pin.
6. An advertr'ng novelty including a front plate having an opening therein, a lock arranged at the rear of the front plate, a pendulum forming a part of the clock, spaced arms depe. din.) from the aenduluin and connected by nsverse bar, a piercing member extending laterally from said bar, a tubular display member projecting through the opening in the front plate and mounted for oscillation with the pendulum, aplug of yieldable material forming a closure for one end of the display member and engaging the piercing member, and a strip of material mounted on the piercing member and interposed between the plug and adjacent face of the transverse bar.
7. An advertising novelty including a base, a back plate secured to the base, a front plate spaced from the back plate and base, respectively, a clock interposed between the front and bacl: plates, there being a transverse opening formed in the lower end of the front plate and a pocket in the rear face thereof, a pendulum forming a part of the clock and mounted to oscillate in said pocket, a supporting member depending from the pendulum, a pin extend ing laterally from the supporting member, a tubular display device mounted for oscillation With the pendulum, and a plug forming a closure for the inner end of the tubular display member and engaging said pm.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
