UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HAYES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNIFE-SHARPENEB.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAu A. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in KnifeShai-peners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a simple article of manufacture that may be easily secured to and carried on a key ring, so as to serve as an identification tag, while at the same time, the device is so formed that it may be used as a nail file and cleaner, cuticle evener and a knife sharpener. The device being always at hand, and yet not in the way.
The invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side edge view thereof; and, Fig. 3 is a'rear face view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The device of the present invention is preferably constructed of steel, although it may be made of other metal or material, and embodies a shank l and a loop 2 formed integrally with the shank, the inner wall of the loop being substantially turbinate in form and terminating at the juncture of the shank and loop in a constricted slot 3 which communicates with a perforation at, the walls of the slot 3 gradually approaching, and being preferably curved in opposite di rections as shown and providing a wedgelike opening in which the blade of a knife may be passed back and forth to sharpen the same. Manifestly the communication between the opening of the loop 2 and the perforation at provides for the yielding of the material and the proper abrasive action on the two sides of the knife blade.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 557,576.
It is preferred in the use of the device as a knife sharpener, that the knife be drawn back and forth at a slight angle to the face of the shank l.
The material .of which the device is constructed is of uniform thickness throughout as shown in 1 and 2, consequently the cutting edges at the juncture of the aperture 4 and the walls 3 are relatively long. By this arrangement the blade to be sharpened can be twisted as it is drawn back and forth and thus apply a strong leverage force to increase the friction of the abrasive action.
The shank 1 is formed on one face with transverse serrations 5 whereby it may serve as a nail file, and preferably correspondingly formed on either or both edges, as indicated at 6. The shank terminates at its end in a smooth extremity 7, the edge of which is rounded to serve as a nail cleaner, this extremity having a rounded side 8 designed to serve as a cuticle evener. The reverse side of the shank 1 is smooth and is designed to receive an identification mark, whereby the device may be secured to a key ring, for instance, and identify the owner of the keys, should they be lost or misplaced.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is evident that I have produced a very useful article which may be cheaply made and which will serve a variety of purposes as above noted, the device being so arranged that it may be easily carried on a key ring, and be at hand at all times when needed. without being in the way.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A sharpener comprising a shank having at a point between its ends a perforation, the material of which the shank is formed at one side of the said perforation and toward one end of the shank being formed into an enlarged continuous loop.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM A. HAYES.
