WILLIAM M. BURKHARD, OF BEAVER FALLS, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed May 3, 1812. Serial No. 694,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Bruno I-IARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Lamp-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for holding lamp chimneys and affording means whereby the chimney may be turned back from the burner and returned toits normal position by a spring.
The invention consists of a simple and eificient device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the device to a burner. Fig.
2 is a bottom plan view of the burner show ing the device attached thereto, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a wick burner of the usual construction. A wire, designated by letter B, bent in circular form is held in a groove D formed about the outer marginal edge of the base of the burner, being secured thereto by means of the retaining plates E, the inner end of each of which is riveted or otherwise secured to the bottom of the burner and their outer edges bent over the grooved marginal edge of the'burner, thus securely retaining the wire. A part of said wire is bent to form a bail-shaped portion F which is downwardly turned and forms a support for the lugs N which are apertured and pivotally mounted thereon. Said lugs are integral with the bracket mem her 0 which has a handle 0 and encircling arms Q, which are adapted to embrace the -is mounted about said circumference of the lamp chimney near its base. The ends of said arms, which are resilient, are connected to a coiled spring R, affording means whereby the device may be applied to lamp chimneys having bases of, different diameters. A coiled spring S bail-shaped portion and has a loop portion T which is bent hookshaped and adapted to bear against said handle, while its ends are adapted to frictionally engage the burner. The oflice of said spring S serves to hold the arms in a plane parallel with the base of the burner and in which position it will hold the chimney fiat upon the burner top.
When it is desired to remove the chimney from the burner, the operator by merely pressing down upon the handle will cause the bracket member to tilt and the arms which frictionally engage the chimney will tilt the chimney laterally, giving access to the burner. When pressure is removed from the handle, the spring S will return the chimney to the burner as will be readily understood.
What I claim to be new is 1. A device for holding lamp chimneys upon burners comprising, in combination with the burner, a circular-outlined wire, plates fastened to the burner and adapted to hold the wire against the under surface of the burner, a pivotal, spring-pressed bracket member mounted upon said wire and having resilient arms, a coiled spring connecting the ends of said arms the latter being adapted to embrace and hold a lamp chimney, as set forth.
2. In combination with a burner, a circular-shaped wire, plates fastened to burner and holding said wire in contact with the under surface of the burner, said wire provided with a bail-shaped portion, a springpressed bracket member pivotally mounted upon the latter, and yielding arms upon the bracket member adapted to embrace a lamp chimney, as set forth.
3. In combination with a burner, a cir' cular-shaped wire, plates fastened to the burner and holding said wire in contact with the under surface of the burner, said wire provided with a bail-shaped portion, a bracket member having integral lugs which are apertured and pivotally mounted upon the bail-shaped portion of the wire, a handle projecting from said bracket member, re- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiX-my silient arms upon the latter, a coiled spring signature in the presence of two Witnesses. connecting the free ends of said arm, a
spring coiled about said bail-shaped member WILLIAM BUBKHARD' and having a loop portion engaging said Witnesses:
handle, the ends of the Wire engaging the H. D. CORNWALL,
burner, as set forth. E. P. OLoss.
