Description

J. H. RAND. HINGED INDEX FRAME.
FILED OCT. 18,
APPLICATION Patented Aug".
UNITED STATES EXEEN T Q F JAMES H. RAND, NEWTOIT, "MASSACHUSETTS Emcee mom-Emma.
' Specification of Letters Patent- Patented Aug. 6-,-1912.
- Application filed October is, 1911. Serial No. 655,417.
To all whom windy-concern:
Be it known that 1, Jaime H. RAND, a
citizen of the United States, andresident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State 'of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinged Index- Frames, of which the following is a specification.
[Thisinvention relates to indexes of the kind comprising a supporter stand upon which are pivotally mounted swinging frames or leaves for displaying the classilied subject matter of the index; and the invention consists more particularly in the construction of the hinge member, and the means for securing the hinge member to the swinging frame.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment .of the invention, 7 Figure 1 is a perspective viewof an index containing the invention, partly broken away; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail- .view, showing in side elevation the upper corner of he swinging frame and. upper hinge member; Fig. 3 is a similar view-f the .lower corner of the frame and lower hinge member; a is a section on line Y H of Fig. 2.; and Fig. 5 is a section on the hinge members bto the outside of the. frames, and the present invention has to doline 5'-5 of Fig. 3.
A represents the support ior bracket on which the other parts are mounted, and B, B, represent the swinging frames or leaves. Plates or having a number of be'ar-. ing holes for the hook-like hinge members I) are secured to the support A in the usual manner. I The frames A are preferably made ofsheet metal and have the marginal upturned flanges b and the inwardly turned lips b forming with the body of the frame an inwardly facing channel. Index cards or strips d suitably inscribed, accord ng to.
the matter to be-classified, are held in the frame with their ends in the side channels of the frame. The parts thus far described may be substantiallyas heretofore employed.
It has beenthe practice hitherto to solder principally with improving the connection between the hingemembers and the frames. To this end I'have invented devices best illustrated in Figs; 2 to inclusive. The
hinge member 1). is made with a relatively long and narrow shank b, which isprefer ably of thesame width and depth the marginal channel of the frame. The shank b? is lodged within the channel against the. i
flange b with the hinge part Z) projecting from the edge ofthe-frame as shown. On the side of the shank b opposite the flange 0 1b is the notch or recess b, the sides or ends of which furnish shoulders to be engaged by a holder secured to the frame to hold the' hinge member in place. This holder, as
herein. shown, consists of a flat sheet metal 5 plate a secured to the body of the frame by rivets or eyelets c, and having an upturned flange c which fits into the'recess 7) of the shank b The-depth of the recess b is preferably the same as the thickness of the 7 flange a so that'the'flange shall not project outward beyond the lip 6 with the result that the 'flange'c? as well as the; shank b are [wholly contained within the channel,
thus leaving a clearspace within the marginal lips 19 for the index cards. And as the body of the holder, 0, is of thin, flat ma' terial, the holder- 0 will permit the index cards (1 to overlie it without material interferenceor bulging. I go With the construction above described the hinge member will be securely'khe'ld and locked in position without the use of'solder, requires, little skill easily and quickly to assemblethe parts, and furnishes; a secureas ment for the hinge member-much stronger,
more reliable, and handsomer in finish than has heretofore been employed. F
Iclaiin:- L
l. A. swinging frame having an upturned-e0 flange and an inwardly turned lip forming with the body of the frame a chan'neha hinge member lying in said channel, and
.a holder member secured to the frame and 1 engaging said hinged member adapted to hold said hinge m ember against lateral, movement out of said channel, and also to hold said hinge memberpositively locked against being .moved lengthwise of said channel. 10o
- vided with a recess in its side,"and holder member of sheet material. secured to the body of the frame and having an upturned flange lodged within said recess.
4. A swinging frame having'an upturned flange and an inwardly turned lip forming with the body cf the frame a channel, a
member lying in said channel of a Width not greater channel 2mm side, and a holder member than the depth of the provided with a recess in the of sheet material secured to the body of the frame and having 10 an upturned flange lodged Within said re cess, and Within said channel.
v Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts, this 11th dayof October, 191-1.
I JAMES H. RAND.
