PLOW ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 8, 1911.
Patented July 30, 1912.
Serial No. 659,152.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITHJOF O. SOLBERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Cado-gan, Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Plow Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for mounting a plow share with relation to a mold board, and has for its object to provide a simple device adapted to effectually lock the share in position at the lower edge of the mold board.
With this object in view the invention consists in providing upon the under side of the mold board a lever actuated mechanism with means for locking the same in an adjusted position, and in providing upon the inner or under side of the share a pivoted catch adapted to engage the said lever oper ated mechanism in such manner that the outer or rear portion of the share is locked in position at the lower edge of the mold board. The mold board and share are provided at their forward end portions with looking devices which are adapted to hold the parts in proper relative positions when the said catch is in engagement with the said lever operated mechanism.
For a full understanding of the inven tion reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a mold board and share showing the locking device in elevation; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the mold board cut on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing an edge view of the locking device; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the share and mold board cut on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing a forward edge view ofa portion of the locking device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the mold board 1 is provided upon its inner or rear side with a pivot member 2. The said member is pivotally mounted upon the mold board in the vicinity of the rear edge thereof and is provided at a point just in advance of its pivotal point of attachment with a slot 3. A spring 4 is attached at one end to the member 2 and extends up through the slot 3 thereof. A member 5 is also pivoted to the rear side of the mold board 1 and the rear end portion of the said member 5 is pivotally connected with the forward portion of the member 2. The said connection between the members 2 and 5 is preferably in the form of a bolt and slot connection, but any other suitable connecting means may be provided which will permit the said members to move simultaneously but upon their respective pivots. A guide 6 is mounted upon the under or rear side of the mold board, and a lever 7 passes up through the said guide. The said lever 7 is fixed at its lower end to the forward end portion of the member 5 in advance of the pivot support of the said member. A rack 8 is mounted upon the inner or rear side of the mold board, and the said lever 7 is provided with a spring actuated pawl 9 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the rack 8 and hold the lever fixed in an adjusted position. The mold board 1 is provided at its lower edge and at a point between its forward and rear ends with a slot 10, the forward wall of which is at a right angle to the lower edge of the said mold board and the rear wall of'which is at an acute angle to the lower edge of the said mold board, as illustrated in the drawing. The mold board 1 is also provided upon its inner or rear side with a guide 11 which is located at a point approximately midway between the forward and rear ends of the said mold board and which projects to some extent below the lower edge of the said mold board. The mold board 1 is provided upon its under or rear side and in the vicinity of its forward end with a landside block 12 which is provided in its outer face with a recess 13. The intermediate portion of the recess 13 is deeper than the end portion thereof, forming a shoulder 14.
The share 15 is provided at its forward pointed end with a landside block 16 adapted to fit in the recess 13, said block having upon its inner side a head 17 adapted to fit snugly against the end wall of the recess 13 and the shoulder 1 1 formed therein. The share 15 is also provided upon its inner or rear side with a pivoted catch 18 which is adapted to pass vertically through the slot 3 provided in the pivot member 2 between the forward edge of the said slot and the spring 4 located therein. The catch 18 is provided at its forward edge with a shoulder 19 which is adapted to lie over the forward edge portion of the slot 3 when the said catch is inserted in the said slot. The share 15 is also provided at its upper edge with a tongue 20 adapted to fit snugly within the slot 10 provided at the lower edge of the said mold board.
To assemble the parts, the block 16 is inserted in the recess 13 with the head 17 lying between the shoulder 14 and the end of the said recess. The catch 18 is then inserted up through the slot 3 in the member 2, while the said member 3 is in an inclined position with relation to the member 5. The lever 7 is then swung so that the members 2 and 5 are brought into substantial alinement with each other, whereby the catch 18 is moved longitudinally and the upper edge of the share 15 is drawn into close contact with the lower edge of the mold board 1, the slot 10 receiving the tongue 20. After the parts have been tightly drawn together as indicated, the pawl 9 carried by the lever 7 is permitted to engage the rack 8, whereby the parts are held in the relative positions indicated. Therefore it will be seen that when the share is mounted at the lower edge of the mold board as desired, it is braced against strains in all directions. The strain to which it is subjected by lifting a furrow slice is borne by the blocks 12 and 16, and when the structure is moved rearwardly the strain to which the share 15 is subjected is borne by the tongue 20 resting in the slot 10. Also when the mold board is lifted the connection between the pivoted catch 18 and the pivot member 2 will cause the parts of the plow to move vertically together. Any strain applied to the intermediate portion of the forward side of the share 15 will be borne by the guide 11 located approximately midway between the front and rear ends of the mold board 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
