UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SQUARE S. ROGERS, OF ROXBUBY, MASSACHUSE'ITS.
SLIDING-J AW WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1912.
Application filed April 26, 1912. Serial No. 693,399.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SQUARE S. Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-J aw renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sliding jaw wrenches and has for its object the provision of a wrench employing a lock block engaging the sliding jaw and a spring actuated pin also adapted to engage sockets in the sliding jaw, said pin and socket construction being adapted to hold the jaw at intervals from the fixed jaw for standard sized nuts, while the lock block structure is adapted for holding the sliding jaw at intermediate points.
My invention also provides means for simultaneously actuating said lock block and" spring actuated pin.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my inven tion; Fig. 2, a fragmental view partly in section; and Fig. 3, a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates the fixed jaw of my improved wrench having the handle 2 integral therewith and having the rectangular tubular housing 3 to receive the shank 4 of the movable aw 5.
6 indicates a rotatable rack catch journaled in the socket 7 in the handle 2 and having a serrated face 8 that is adapted to engage the serrated surface 9 of the shank 41.
10 indicates aleaf spring secured to the fixed jaw l and mounted in the recess 11 therein and engaging a shoulder 12 on the rotatable rack catch 6 to normally hold the serrated face 8 of said block in engagement with the face 9 of the shank 1. The rotatable 'rack catch 6 is actuated against the resistance of spring 10 by means of a disk 13 rotatably mounted in a recess 14 in the face of the handle 2 and having an integral lug or projection 15 that is mounted in the recess 16 in said handle to move said disk. The disk 13 is secured to the block 6 by means of. a screw shown at 17 or in any other suitable manner.
18 indicates asocket in the handle 2 having a plunger 19 mounted therein with a laterally extending pin or' projection 20 extending toward and adapted to be engaged by a shoulder 21 on the rotatable rack catch 6. The plunger 19 is provided with a longitudinally extending pin 22 that is adapted to engage sockets 23 in the under face of the shank 4E, said sockets being arranged at intervals to space the jaw 5 from the jaw 1 at the distances required for nuts of ordinary size.
24 indicates a spring mounted in the socket 18 and engaging plunger 19 to nor mally hold the pin 22 in engagement with the shank 4 of any one of said sockets 23.
In use, it will be apparent that when pressure on the projection 15 is released, the spring 10 will move the rotatable rack catch 6 into engagement with the serrated face 9 of the shank 4 and the jaw 5 will be held from movement. The arrangement of the plunger 19 is as stated, for the purpose of engaging the shank 4 by means of the sockets 23 to hold the jaw 5 at the proper distance from the jaw 1 to engage standard sized nuts. It will be furthermore apparent, that one operation of the lug or projection 15 serves to move the rotatable rack catch 6 out of engagement with the shank 4 and also through the instrumentality of the pin 20 on the plunger 19 and the shoulder 21 on the block 6, the plunger 19 will be moved against the resistance of the spring 24: to move the pin 22 from engagement with the sockets 23.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a wrench, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw having a shank slidably mounted on said fixed jaw, a rotatable rack catch mounted on the handle of the fixed jaw, a spring actuated pin slidably mounted in said handle and adapted to engage the shank aforesaid, and means to simultaneously actuate said rotatable rack catch and pin from engagement with said shank.
2. In a wrench, a fixed; jaw having a handle, a jaw provided with a shank slid ably mounted on said handle, said shank being provided with a serrated face and sockets in said serrated face, a rotatable rack catch having a serrated face adapted to engage the serrated face of the shank, means to hold said rotatable rack catch normally in engagement with the shank, a plunger slidably mounted in said handle and having a pin adapted to engage the sockets in the shank aforesaid, a laterally extending pin on said plunger, and a shoulder on said rotatable rack catch engaging said pin.
8. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw having a handle, a movable j aw having a shank slidably mounted on said handle, said shank being provided Witha serrated face and sockets in said serrated face, a rotatable rack catch rotatably mounted in said handle and adapted to engage the serrated face of the shank, a spring secured to the handle and engaging said rotatable rack catch to hold it in engagement with the shank, a spring actuated plunger mounted in said handle and having a pin projecting therefrom and adapted to engage the sockets in the shank, a laterally extending pin on said plunger, and a shoulder on the rotatable rack catch adapted to engage said laterally extending pin to move the plunger against the resistance of the spring actuating it.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
