Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KEN- NEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naples, in the county of Morris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates Ato reels and` more particularly to a barb wire reel of that type which is mounted in a wheel vsupported frame and is adapted to Wind up the wire in the'movement of the machine over the ground.'
The primary object of the present invention is to provide new and novel means for easily and quickly removing the roll of wire aftr the same has been wound upon the ree A further object of t-heinvention resides in the provision of a reel consisting of two telescoping sections, means holding said sections in :assembled relation and preventing their relative longitudinal movement, and means for mounting the reel in the frame of the machine whereby'said sections may be readily separated and the roll ofu wire removed. f
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which is simple in construction, highly convenient and serviceable in practical use and may be manufactured at a small cost.
. `With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of a reel embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the reel; and Fig. t is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail tol the drawing 5 designates the parallel longitudinal side bars constituting the frame of the machine.
These bars terminate at their rear ends in suitable handles and upon said barsvthe boX body 7 is mounted, said body being adapted to receive various tools which itis desired to convey from place to place. The side bars are mounted upon a wheel axle 8 upon each end of which a supporting wheel f) is revolubly mounted. Rods 10 are ixed to the bars 5 beneath the body 7 to support 'Said body when the machine is stationary.
Between the front ends of the side bars 5 my improved reel 11 is mounted. This reel, shown in detail in 3 consists of an outer section 12 and an inner section 13 which is telescopically engaged in said outer section. Each ofthe reel sections is provided upon one of its ends with a head 14 between which the wire is adapted to be wound upon the periphery of the outer section 12. Each ofthe heads 14 is centrally provided with a rectangular opening to receive a square shaft 15 upon one end of which a ball 1G is formed which is loosely disposed in a socket 17 hingedly secured to one of the side bars 5, as indicated at 18.
A support 19 is fixed to the bar 5 and eX- tends inwardly thereof to normally support the socket 1.7 in a horizontal position. The other end of the shaft 15 is cylindrical in forni and is removably seated in a bearing groove formed in the upper-surface of the other of the side bars 5. A half bearing 20 is hinged at one end upon the bar 5 as indicated at 21 and is adapted to receive the upper portion of lhe shaft. The free end of this bearing plate is provided with an eye 22 to receive a hook 23 secured upon the frame bar. adjacent to the ball 1G, a collar 24.- is formed which limits the longitudinal movement of the reel 11 in one direction. A'sleeve 25 is arranged upon said shaft between the opposite end of .the reel and the shaft bearing and prevents longitudinal movement of said reel in the other direction.
Upon the end of the shaft 15 f The reel section 12 is provided with a loni its entire lengt-h. To the inner surface of the section 13 of the] reel a leaf spring 27 is fixed atone of its ends. To the free end of this spring-a stripping pin 28 is secured and is movable through an opening in the Wall of the 'reel section 13. This pin also projects through the longitudinal slot 26 of the reel section 12 and serves to prevent 'relative rotative movement of said sections.
To the inner face of the head 14 of the reel section 13 a stud 29 is secured to which one end of the Wire W 'Which is to be Wound on mediateroller and over the front roller from which latter roller it is drawn and Wound ,upon the reel.
F rom the above description it is thought that the construction and manner of use'of my improved reel Will be readily under stood.
The end of the Wire is iirst` attached to the stud Q9 and the operator pushes themachine or carrie-r in advance whereupon rotative movement is imparted tothe reel and the Wire taken up and Wound thereon. Aff
ter a sufficient quantity of Wire has been Wound upon the reel, the end of the Wire is disconnected from the stud 29 and the bearing plate 20 is released so that the shaft 15 may be liftedy and the sleeve 25 removed therefrom.' The operator noW grasps the head le of the reel section 13 and pulls said section out of the outer reel section 12, the stripping pin`28 engaging the `end of the wire roll so) that said roll is caused to move with the reel section 13 off of said outer section. When th'e shaft 15 is lifted, the socket member 17 swings upwardly from the hinge 18. After'the reel section 1 3 has been removedthe operator forces the stripping pin E28 inwardly and grasps the spring plate 27 which is disposed adjacent to the open end of said reel section. The roll of Wire may then be easily removed and the reel section replaced Within the outer section 12. After replacing the shaft 15 in its bearing, the'operation may be continued and the rest of the Wire quickly Wound.

' vVhile I have shownv and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the'various elements, it Will be understood that the invention is susceptible of a great many minor modifications Without departing fromthe essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed isz- 1. A. reel comprising an outer cylindrical. section, an inner section telescopically engaged in said outer section, saidv outer seetion having a longitudinal slot therein, and a spring held stripping pin extending through the Wall of the inner section and disposed in the slot of the outer section to hold said sections against relative rotation, said pinl acting to strip the Wire 'from the outer reel section when the innersection is removed therefrom. l

A reel comprising an outer cylindrical section, an inner section telescopically en gaged in said outer section, said outer section being provided With a longitudinal slot extending substantially its entirelength, a leaf spring iixed to the inner .surface of said inner section, and a stripping pin secured to the free end of said spring and inojvable through the Wall of the inner reel section and extending through the slot of the outer reel section and beyond the periphery thereof, to strip the Wire from the outer reel section When the inner section is removed therefrom.
