To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM HENRY GAR- LooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and luseful Improvements in Devices for Preserving- Piles, &c., of which the following isk a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to the preservation of timber and has special reference4 to an improved manner of preserving timber and preparing the same for such preservation.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby a preserving iuid may be forced from the inner portion of the Figs. 3 to 8, inclusive, is found best adapted timber outward without splitting the-same With the above and other objects-in view the invention consists in general of an 1mproved .method'of'vpreparing and preserv 1n timber.

In preparing the timber for preservation under vthe method forming the subjectmatter of this application the same is first bored from one end-preferably the lower end of thetreeto a point somewhatre'- mote from the op osite end of the timber,
the bore being in icated at 10 in a log 11. The upper end of this bore 10 is slightly lenlarged as indicated at 12. Around the upper end of the timber is applied an endless metallic band 13 which prevents splitting of the upper end of the timber. Around the timber prior to applying any pressure there is wound a wire `14 which has its ends secured by suitable staples 15, the wire being wound tightly so that pressure applied union 17 may be applied thereto to connectf the bore with a pipe 18 which leads from a .pump 19 mounted on a tank 2O wherein' is' contained the preserving fluid. The pump is'connected with the tank by means of` a suitable pipe 21. Valves 22 and 23 are in l,terposed in the -pipes 18 and 21 betweenv vtheir ends so that pressure may be maintamed without the use of the pump 19 after the same has been raised tothe required point l The form of attaching device shown in for certain kinds of wood wherein the preservative iuidl tends to escape through the end t`o which the nipple is applied. In this form of the invention there is provided a nipple 24 which is threaded at its lower end as is the nipple 16, and this nipple is also threaded at its upper end as at 25. The pipe 18 is provided on the end adjoining the nipple with a union flange 26 and aV union connecting or backing nut 27 which serves to hold vthe pipe and nipple closely together. Between the threaded portions of the nipple 24 the same is provided with a hexagonal flange 28 for the purpose of affording a gri for a wrench. Screwed on the lower en of the ni ple is a follower nut 29 beneath which 1s a follower plate 30 which has a raised annular rib 31 arranged to form a seat for the underside of the follower nut 29. The other side of this follower platevis provided with a series of concentric annular grooves 32 and the follower plateis provided with a centrally disposed opening 33 of greater diameter than that part of the nipple whereon vitiits so that it is free tov move longitudinall thereof.
Around the fo lower nut are spaced notches 34 for the reception of a Spanner wrench so that the nut may be turned upon the nipple. Bearing against the grooved side of the follower plate is a gasket 35 of rubber or similar elastic material. The follower plate is made of suiicient sizeso as [to nearly cover the head of the timber 11 and the gasket is conterminous with the fol lower plate. In using this form of the device thefollower plate, gasket, and follower nut are placed in position on the nipple; the latter is then screwed firmly into the timber 11 and after the nipple is in position the follower nut is tightened and this results in the follower plate being forced down and the gasket belng compressed and caused to enter the rings, thus preventing lateral spreading, so that it is forced rmly against the end of the timber and prevents all escape of the preservative fluid through the end pores of said timber.
After the parts are arranged as above described the ump 19 is operated and preservative luld forced into the bore 10, the pump being kept going until a heavy pressure is obtained wlthin the bore. The fluid is thus forced outward through the pores of the wood and the log is kept from splitting by reason ofits being wound by the wire 14.
It is to be noted that the pressure is main- 20 tained at a sulcient degree to split the log under ordinary circumstances since a high pressure is necessary to force the preservative fluid quickly from within the bore out ward. Furthermore, the wire prevents injury to the timber when in use such as for piling or the like, the ywire being left on after the pressure is released.
There has thus been provided a simple and eIicient method of the kind set forth for preserving timber.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is l In an apparatus for preserving timber, means for connecting a pressure pipe to the timber comprising a threaded nipple adapted to enter a hole in said timber; and means for preventin the escape of preservative fluid from sai timber comprising an elastic gasket surroundin said ni -ple and lying against the end o the tim er, a follower plate bearing on said gasket, and a follower nut threaded on said nipple and bearing on said plate to force the same in the direction of the timber.
