This invention relates to a locking bung, the general object of the invention being to provide a tubular body for insertion in the bung hole of a cask and a sealing plate engaging a gasket in the body, with simple and emcient means for clamping the plate in position sealing the passage through the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple form of tool for operating the bolt which actuates the locking means.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the, combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the invention and showing the operating tool in use.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of the member which carries the locking dogs.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the tubular body of the device which is formed with a flange 2 at its top portion which extends outwardly and with a flange 3 at its top portion which extends inwardly. The inner end of the body is formed with a reduced exteriorly threaded part 4 which is connected to the main part of the body by an annular flat part 5 which forms a seat for a gasket 6. The closure or sealing plate is shown at 7, this plate having a centrally arranged inwardly extending cylindrical part 8 which is internally screw threaded and the periphery of the plate is formed with an angle flange 9, the outer part of which is adapted to rest on the gasket and said flange forms a recess 10 in the outer face of the plate.
A bolt 11 has its threaded end adapted to be threaded in the cylindrical part 8 and said bolt has an intermediate collar 12 thereon which forms a seat for a member 13, the inner face of which is formed with a recess 14 to receive part of the collar. The outer end of the bolt is formed with a head 15.
The member 13 is formed with the oppositely arranged pairs of perforated ears 16 between which are pivoted the locking dogs 1'7, the free ends of which are adapted to engage under the flange 3, as shown in Figure 1.
Thus it will be seen that by placing the plate 7 in the body with the outer part of the flange 9 resting on the gasket 6 and then turning the bolt 11 outwardly, the member 13 is moved outwardly, which causes the dogs 17 to firmly engage the flange 3 and exert pressure on the parts to tightly force the plate 7 against the gasket to provide a liquid and air-tight joint between the plate 7 and the body. By turning the bolt in an opposite direction, the member 13 is moved inwardly so as to release the locking dogs from the flange and then the parts can be removed to permit the contents of the barrel or cask to be removed.
I also provide a wrench 18 for turning the bolt and this Wrench has an angle-shaped handle having a socket 19 extending laterally from the short arm thereof, so that the socket can be readily placed in the body 1 over the head of the bolt and a split locking ring 20 is located in the groove 21 in the socket for frictionally holding the wrench on the bolt.
A nut member 22 is threaded on the reduced part 4 of the body to fasten the body in the bung hole of the cask and the member 13 is provided with the eyes 23 on its upper or outer face for facilitating removal of the parts by a tool or the like engaged with said eyes.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided simple meansfor closing a bung hole in a cask and one which will prevent leakage of the contents of the cask and prevent the passage of air into the same.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A locking bung comprising a tubular body, means for holding the same in a bung hole of a cask, said body having an internal shoulder therein, agasket for engaging plate'having a flange for engaging the gasket, and an inwardly extending cylindrical part internally threaded, a bolt threaded in said cylindrical part, a member rotatably supported on the bolt, said bolt having a shoulder located under the member, dogs pivoted to the member, an internal flange on the outer part of the body for engagement by the dogs when the bolt is turned in a certain direction.
