AUTOMATIC GREASE-CUP.

To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that we, PRESTON BOONE LEE and JOHN F. MACINDOE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chadds Ford, county of Chester, and Falls of Schuylkill,
county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyltion; one in which the top or air chamber may be easily removed to permit of filling and one presenting only smooth even surfaces within said .cup.
With these and other objects as may here-j inafter more fully appear, our invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the specification and claimed in the claims and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure 1 is a vertical view of the device with the air chamber in elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device, the piston being shown in elevation and broken away at one portion. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line AA, Fig. 2. Referring to said drawings by numerals, a lubricant chamber 1, of any suitable form and material, but preferably as here shown, cylindrical in form, the sides thereof being interiorly threaded, with a head 2, preferably hexagonal in form, terminates at one extremity in the discharge nozzle 3, the cylindrical end of which said nozzle is exteriorly threaded to permit of the same being screwed into an oil hole adapted to receive it. The end of said lubricant chamber opposite to the discharge end is open, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. In the lower head of said cylinder 1 is provided a suitable opening 4, providing a seat for a valve 5, the stem 6 of said valve extending outwardly beyond the head of said cylinder and terminating in an enlarged or flanged portion 7, which said portion serves to retain in place the spring 8 which is wrapped around said stem.
A cup or air chamber 9, preferably cylindrical in form, exteriorly threaded to engage the threads in lubricant chamber 1, is provided at its upper end with a head 10, formed with an outwardly projecting portion 11, preferably hexagonal in form for the purpose of forming a grip to permit of screwing said chamber into or unscrewing it from the lubricant chamber 1. Within said chamber 9 is mounted a hollow cylindrical piston or plunger 12, of any suitable material but preferably of thin or sheet metal. Said piston is formed with annular runs or flanges at either end, the flange 14 at the end adjoining the grease cup being a tight sliding fit within said chamber and the flange 13 at the other end being of a slightly smaller diameter. Attached to the upper and lower heads of said piston 12, and preferably integral therewith are provided handles 15 and 16, by means of which said piston or plunger 12 may be quickly and easily withdrawn from the chamber 9.
A lock nut 17 is threaded to engage the threads on air chamber 9.

' Apertures 20 and 21 are provided in the outer rim of said piston 12 so that said pis- Eon may be withdrawn from said air cham- The piston 12 is turned by means of the handles 15 and 16 to a position where projecting pins 18 and 19 may be passed through said apertures 20 and 21, after which the piston can be withdrawn from the air chamber.
The operation of the device is as follows: The nozzle 3 is inserted into the oil hole in the machine adapted to receive it, the grease cup is then filled, the air chamber is screwed into the grease-cup until suflicient compression is had, then the lock-nut 17 is tightened down against top of grease-cup and in this position locks the air chamber in relation to the grease-cup. When the air chamber is in 3 position for inserting in grease-cup, the .pis- I ton or plunger 12 drops down the full length of its stroke, the under sides of upper flange 13 resting on the upper sides of pins 18 and 19. This allows lower flange 14 to extend below outer end of air chamber permitting air to pass around the said lower flange into the air chamber 9, Where the air is trapped and compressed as the air chamber 9 is screwed down into the grease cup, during which movement the plunger or plston 12 is forced toward upper part of air chamber and compresses the trapped air into a working force to expel the grease and as the grease leaves the cup the plunger or piston descends.
To facilitate the removal of the air chamber, when it is desired to refill the cup, the valve 5 is unseated allowing air to enter the cup thereby destroying the vacuum formed therein.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a grease-cup, a chamber for containing the lubricant, an outlet from said chamtain said spring in place.
2. In a grease-cup, a chamber for containing the lubricant, a suitable outlet for said chamber, an air chamber communicating with said lubricant chamber, a piston mounted within said'air chamber by means of whichair is trapped and compressed within said air chamber above said piston, handles attached to said piston to facilitate its removal from said air chamber, and means for limiting the travel of said piston.
3. In a grease-cup, or device of the character described, a chamber for containing the lubricant, a suitable outlet for said chamber, an air chamber communicating with 'said lubricant chamber, a piston mounted within said air chamber by means of which air is trapped and compressed within said air chamber above said piston, means for limiting the travel of said piston and means for removal of said piston from said air chamber.

In a grease-cup, or device of the character described, a chamber for containing the lubricant, a suitable outlet for said cham- I her, an air chamber communicating with said lubricant chamber, a piston mounted within said air chamber by means of which air is trapped and compressed within said air chamber above said piston, said piston being formed with annular rims or flanges at either end the flange at the end adjoining the grease-cup having a tight sliding fit within said air chamber and the flange at the other end being of a slightly smaller diameter, handles attached to said piston to facilitate its removal from said air chamber, means for limiting the travel of said piston and means for removal of said piston from said air chamber.
