LIFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed March 27, 1912. Serial No. 686,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ONUFAR JAROSZ, a citizen of Austria, residing at Clayville, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Lifting Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a lifting device, and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, efiicient device adapted to grasp and hold pans, plates, cuspidors, and the like articles, whereby same may be conveyed from place to place in a convenient manner. The device may be found particularly useful in removing hot plates or pans from the ovens of stoves or ranges.
The invention embodies a relatively long arm having a right angled bend, the end thereof being provided with an engaging member or jaw adapted to cotiperate with an upper engaging member or jaw, actuated by a finger lever disposed adjacent the handle, and pivoted to said bended part of the arm, whereby to hold in a secure manner one edge of a plate or other similar article. There is slidingly mounted on the arm a bracket or carriage adapted to pivotally hold a second engaging member or jaw, whereby to hold the pan or plate on the side diametrically opposite to the first mentioned engaging members.
Other features will be observed by referring to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lifting device; Fig. 2 is a detail View enlarged, of a bracket employed; Fig. 8 is a detail view enlarged of a jaw, showing a front elevation; Fig. 4: is a detail enlarged of a link, showing an end elevation; Fig. 5 is a detail enlarged, showing a perspective of a jaw employed; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the lifting device, showing same holding a plate. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a bell crank employed; Fig. 8 is a detail, enlarged of a ferrule, showing certain projecting brackets in end elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device embodies a relatively long arm -1 having secured at one end a suitable handle 2. Said arm is bent substantially at right angles to itself at 3 and its end is provided with an engaging member or jaw 4 having a rather broad surface to contact with the plate or other articleto be held. Associated with jaw 4, whereby to securely hold one edge of a plate is another jaw or engaging member 5 bifurcated at 6, whereby same may be pivotally secured to the depending portion 7 of arm 1, as at 8. The outer ends 99 of member 5 are pivotally connected to link 10, which is bifurcated at 11, whereby to be pivotally secured at 12 to bell crank lever 13 fulcrumed to arm 1 at 14 and having its upper portion 15 connected by wire or other suitable means 16 to bell crank lever 17 fulcrumed at 18 to brackets 19-19 formed integral with ferrule 20 assembled to the reduced end of handle 2.
The means to grasp and hold the plate or other similar article opposite to the location of jaws 4L and 5, embodies a bracket 21 having aperture 22, whereby to be slidingly mounted to arm 1 and depending bearings 2328, adapted to hold stud 24: to pivotally assemble engaging member or jaw 25 having an upper portion 26 provided with an angular shaped recess 27 adapted to engage arm 1- in the rear of the location of bracket 21, whereby said jaw 25 may be held at any given location desired along arm 1. Arm 1- may be provided with stud 28 adapted to prevent bracket 21 from sliding therebeyond.
In order to grasp and hold a plate with the aforesaid device, the user takes it up by handle 2, and if jaws at and 5 are closed, he can open same by merely lowering jaws 4 and 5 below the. position of handle 2, by tipping the device. Immediately lower aw 4 has been disposed under the remote edge of plate 30, the user brings to bear jaw 5 against the upper adjacent edge of plate 80, whereby to cotiperate with jaw 4.- by pressing inwardly with the thumb uponthumb plate 40 of bell crank lever 17, which through its aforementioned connection with jaw 5 will cause same to be moved into position to hold the edge of plate 30. The edge of plate 30 opposite to the location of jaws 4t and 5 is held by moving bracket 21 forward or rearward in accordance with its location on arm 1 with reference to the size of plate 30, until jaw 25 comes into engagement with the respective edge of said plate.
It will be observed, that any pressure against jaw 25 will be resisted by upper portion 26 thereof, which engages arm -l. However said jaw 25 may be freely moved with reference to arm lmanipulating the upper portion 31 of bracket 21. Jaw 25 is disposed below the location of jaws 1 and 5 with reference to arm 1-, so as to hold plate or other article on a level or horizontal plane with respect to the floor, when arm 1 is held on an incline, which is its natural disposition in the hand of the user.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lifting device, the combination of an arm having a handle, jaws adapted to hold one edge of an article, a lever fulcrumed adjacent said handle for actuating said jaws to closed position, a relatively movable bracket mounted on said arm, a jaw having an upper portion pivotally assembled to said bracket,- and an angular recess in said upper portion of the movable jaw, whereby to contact with said arm to hold said pivotally mounted jaw in given position for securing the opposite edge of said article.
2. In a lifting device of the character described, the combination of an arm having a handle at one end, a jaw formed at the other end of said arm, a second jaw pivot-ally associated with said first named jaw, a bell crank lever fulcrumed upon brackets adjacent said handle, means connecting said second named aw with said. bell crank lever for actuating said second named jaw to close position with reference to said first named jaw, whereby to hold one edge of an article, a relatively movable bracket mounted on said arm, a jaw having an upper portion pivot-ally secured to said bracket, and an angular recess in said upper portion, said recess adapted to contact with said arm, whereby to hold said last named jaw in given position to secure the opposite edge of said article.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my name this 23rd day of March, 1912.
ONUFAR AROSZ. lVitnesses SAMUEL STRAU, DAVID B. LISLE.
