TYPE-WRITER COPY-HOLDER.
Application filed March 25, 1911. Serial No. 616,879.
This invention relates to an improvement in manuscript holders.
The primary object of said invention is to provide a device for conveniently holding a plurality of sheets of paper or a note book, together with means for indicating the line which is being copied, said indicating means being provided with a magnifying glass to assist the operator in reading the manuscript.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the manuscript holder; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of said holder; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clamping means; and Fig.
5 is an end view of Fig. 1.. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, showing the manner in which the spring 14 is retained between the bifurcated terminals of the bar 13.
In the drawings, 10 designates a plate which is supported by the adjustable bar 11, said adjustable bar entering a sleeve 12 formed on the back of the plate, said bar being locked to said sleeve by means of the screw 12. The plate 10 is substantially rectangular and is provided adjacent its upper edge with a copy retaining bar 13 which is held in contact with the plate'by means of the spring 14. The strip 13 is of thinimaterial and its extreme end'portion is secured to the member 17, the secured end portion of this strip being bifurcated, the end portion of the spring 14 being secured to the member lt' between the bifurcations of the strip. By this construction it will be noted that the spring 14 will maintain the strips 13 in contact with the plate, the mem- Speeification of Letters Patent.

her 17 extending above said plate. One edge of the plate is upturned and forms a bearing for a stub shaft 15, said shaft being rotated by a knurled knob 15, on which is mo-unteda sprocket 16, the other end of said shaft 15 being supported by the end portion 17 of a rib 17 which, together with the upturned edge portion 18 forms a track or guideway. Slidably arranged Wltlllll sa d guideway is a weighted ,member 20, said member being provided with a knob, or extension 21 by which the same may be manipulated. A sprocket chain 22 is secured to said weight, said chain passing over the sprocket 16, its end portion being secured to the transverse bar 23, said bar belng provided with hooks 23 which embrace the edge portion 24 of the plate and which space said bar from said plate. Secured to said bar is a transversely extending reading glass 25, the combined weight of said glass and said bar being equal to the weight of the member 20. p
In practice, the manuscript 1s placed beneath the spring pressed bar 13 and the first line to be copied is positioned to lie d rectly beneath the reading glass 25. As this line is copied the weight 20 is raised, thus per- The device is supported by the arm 11 which extends within the tube 27. This construction permits the arm 11, which is secured to the plate 10, to be advanced toward and from the operator, the arm '11 being maintained against lateral movement by the cap 29 the same projects, the cap 29 embracing the tube 27. The tube 27 is supported within a sleeve 30 which is secured to the arm 31', said arm 31 being formed integral w th and extending at right angles to the portion 32 of a clamp, which consists of the portions 32 and 33, said clamping portions being locked in position on the frame of a typethrough which writing machine by means of the turn buckle 34:.
it will be noted that the clamping device may be dispensed with and the copy holder supported by a stand or pedestal.
What is claimed is 1. In a manuscript holder, an adjustable supporting bracket, a rectangular plate, a spring pressed arm extending transversely of said plat-e, a weighted member movable vertically on said plate, a sprocket support-- ed adjacent the upper edge of said plate, a chain'passing over said sprocket, one end of said chain being secured to said weight, a bar extending transversely across said plate and secured to said chain, a reading glass secured to said bar, and a plurality of guide members carried by oneend of said bar and embracing the edge of said plate, said bar and reading glass being of approximately the same weight as said weighted member.
2. In a manuscript holder, a supporting bracket, a plate, a spring pressed bar secured adjacent the upper edge of said plate, a bar extending transversely across said plate, one ed e of said plate' being bent upwardly, a ri spaced from and extending parallel to said edge, a weighted member slidably arranged between said edge and said rib, a shaft supported by said edge and said rib, a sprocket arranged on said shaft, a transversely extending bar, a flexible connection between said bar and said Weighted member, said-connection passing over said sprocket, and a plurality of hooks secured to the end portion of said bar, said hooks embracing the edge of said plate.
3. In a manuscript holder, a plate, a bar slidably arranged on said plate, a weighted member, said member being capable of vertical adjustment, parallel guides for said member, said guides being integral with said plate, a flexible connection between said bar and said weighted member, a plurality of hooks carried by one end of said bar, said hooks and one of said guides spacing said bar from said plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing asmy own, I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
