Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, HARRY ANTRIM HAWS, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, and TI-IADDnUs 0. WHITE, residing in the borough of Manhattan, New York county, in the city and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holders for Type-I/Vriters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in means for supporting paper and envelops in position upon a type-writer; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eflicient, and inexpensive adjustable support for holding paper and envelops in position upon the type-writer in such a manner that the same may be easily and conveniently transferred therefrom and guided into proper position within the carriage.

Further, the invention has for its object to provide a support which may be readily attached to or removed from a type-writer without injuring or marring the same in any way or interfering with the ordinary operation thereof.

To these ends our invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like figures of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a partial plan view of a type-writer with a support constructed according to and embodying our invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the support detached from the type-writer and showing in dotted lines the extensible member drawn out. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the support or holder as seen from its front, and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.

In said drawings, designates a Remington Standard type writer from which the usual paper-shelf has been removed, and 11 denotes our improved paper-holder arranged in position thereon, comprising a bed 12, provided upon its under side adjacent to its front edge with depending split pins 13 13, adapted to be fitted into the paper-shelf sockets 14: 1 1 on the type-writer, whereby to hold said paper-holder rigidly in position upon the machine.

Upon the under side of the bed 12 are secured longitudinal grooved guides 15 15, within which work sliding supports 16 16, having their ends bent upwardly and extending through longitudinal recesses 17 17 in the bed 12 and terminating in transverse ends 18 18, which are adapted to be duly held to their adjusted position upon the bed by frictional contact, the recesses 17 17 extending inwardly from the. opposite ends of the bed 12 toward its center and there separated from each other by an intermediate portion 19 of the bed.

Upon the under side of the bed 12 transversely to the guides 15 15 are arranged tubular guides 20, which are secured to said bed 12 by soldering and clamps 21 21. Within said tubular guides 20 is supported an extensible member adapted to support the projecting ends of long sheets of paper, which comprises rods 22 22, having their inner ends arranged within said tubular guides 20 20 and their extreme outer ends bent upwardly at right angles to theremainder thereof and united adjacent to their outer ends by a bar 23, which is substantially coextensive in length with the length of the bed 12.

ment of the rods 22 22 of the extensible member may be limited, and 26 denotes a spring having one end secured to one of the adjustable ends 18 18 upon the inner surface thereof and its free end extending inward and downward and terminating near the center of the portion 19 of the bed 12, which spring is adapted to bear upon the top layer of the superposed layers of paper disposed upon the bed 12 intermediate the ends 18 18.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: A quantity of paper or envelops, as the case may be, is first placed in position upon the bed 12 and the ends 18 18 adjusted longitudinally upon the bed 12 until the same con tact with the vertical edges of the paper or envelops and the end of the spring 26 bears 'upon the upper surfaceof the uppermost layer. To transfer the paper or envelops in the cylinder. In this way, assuming, of course, that the paper upon the bed 12 has been first properly adjusted thereon, the sheet will be properly fed into position upon the cylinder by simply rotating the same, asthe adjustable ends 18 18 serve to guide the paper true to the cylinder, and each succeeding sheet may be brought into the same position upon the cylinder without requiring any further adjustment. The advantages hereof will be readily appreciated when it is desired to address a large number of envelops or write upon sheets of paper on which it is desired to have the writing begin at substantially the same point in each sheet or envelop. 1

It will of course be understood that for the diflerent forms of type-writers different attaching devices may be required and that we do not wish to confine or restrict ourselves to the precise form herein shown and described, since the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of our invention; but

What we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A paper-holder adapted for attachment to a type-writer comprising a bed, longitudinal and transverse guides arranged upon the under side of said bed, ends arranged upon said bed and adjustable in the longitudinal guides thereon, an extensible member adapted for projection beyond the outlines of said bed, comprising two parallel members adapted to work in the transverse guides, and united adjacent to their outer ends by a transverse sec tion, substantially as specified.

2. A paper-holder adapted for attachment to atype-writer comprising a bed, longitudinal and transverse guides arranged upon the under side of said bed, ends arranged upon said bed and adapted for adjustment in the longitudinal guides, means for limiting the movement of said ends,v an extensible member adapted for projection beyond the outlines of said bed, and to lie wholly within the outlines thereof when contracted, said extensible member comprising two parallel members adapted to Work in the transverse guides and united adjacent to their outer ends by a transverse bar, means for limiting the movement of said extensible member, and attaching devices arranged upon said bed whereby to secure the paper-holder in position upon a type-writer, substantially as specified.

3. A paper-holder adapted for attachment to a type-writer comprising abed having longitudinal recesses therein, longitudinal guides arranged upon the under side of said bed in line with the recesses therein, ends adjustably arranged upon said bed having supportingsections extending through the recesses and working in said longitudinal guides, guides arranged upon the under side of said bed at right angles to the longitudinal guides, rods adapted to'work in said guides having their outer ends bent upwardly to the remainder thereof, and united adjacent to their upturned ends by a transverse bar, a spring having one end secured to one of the adjustable ends and its other end free and extending inward and downward and adapted to bear upon the paper on the bed, and attaching means on W said bed whereby to secure said holder in position upon a type-writer, substantially as specified.
