MITER-BOX.
To (/.ZZ @L1/0m it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTTAN VVOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of lWoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for making` miter joints and has for its object the construction of a miter box in which joints at any desired angle may be readily and accurately cut.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as will be specifically described and pointed out in the claims.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing in whichd Figure 1 is a plan view of my intention,
and F 2 an inverted plan, one of the end posts being omitted in Fig. 1 and both posts being omitted in Fig. 2. Fig. is a view in frontl elevation. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation, both end posts and slide being` omitted. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the guides or posts with vertical slots er kerfs, showing means for securing' it to the bar. a portion of which is shown in crosssection. Fig. t3 is a side view of part of frame showing the square opening for securing the shank of the central guide post. Fig. 7 is an end view of the box opposite from that seen in Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the combined feet and cerner brackets of the frame.
Referring to the illustration, 1 is the front side of the frame, 2 the rear side and f5, 3 the end pieces secured. together at the corners by the brackets s secured inside the corners of the frame and formed integrally with the feet et on which the frame rests. The frame is made preferably of metal and is angle-shaped as seen in Fig. 9., portion of the front side being cut out and disclosing the rear side. The frame is strengthened by the ribs 5 near the center and crossbars 6 near the ends. A board or plank T is secured above the frame by screws S, forming a platform on which are marked the lines indicating the angles for sawing, as seen in Fig. 1. A bar 9 is hinged to the rear of the side piece 2 by hinges composed of the parts 10 and 11, the former of which is secured to the end of the bar. the latter Specification of Letters Patent.

The guide posts 12 with the vertical ke-rfs are .secured to the bar 9 as shown in Fig. 5, the lower end of the posts being smaller and forming a shoulder set into the bar, with nuts 13 on the threaded ends under the bar. The kerfs are narrower at the upper ends to conform somewhat to the shape of a saw and the posts are set atI various angles as shown so that the kerfs will all register with a central post on the opposite side of the platform, as presently described. ll'he bar being hinged to the platform permits the box to be folded into smaller space by dropping the guide posts upon the platform as seen in Fig. 7 and indicated in Fig. 4. The side 2 supports a central guide post 14 which is adjustably secured to the head 15 of a rod or shank 16 rotatably secured in the side piece 1 and supported under the platform by braces 17 and 1S secured to the respective side pieces 1 and 2. The free end of the bolt is threaded and bears a nut 19 and between the nut and brace 17 a coil spring 20 encircles the bolt. rEhe nut may be used for adjusting the tension of the spring. Near the head 15 the bolt has a square enlargement 21 adapted to lit a similarly shaped opening' in the side piece 1, Fig. 6, the spring forcing the enlargementv into the opening where it is held, and supports the guide post 1% in an upright position. The guide post may be laid horizontal with the frame, or nearly so, as indicated in Fig. 1, by pulling the bolt 16 out until the enlargement is free of the side piece. rEhe vertical kerf of the guide 14: may be set to register with any of the guides 12 at any desired angle, as indicated by the lines and gures in Fig. 1, as the post is freely movable in the head and held in place by the shoulder like that seen in Fig. 5, with a nuty 22 under the head.
The frame and the guide bar 9 are adapted to be locked together so as to mak-e them rigid by hooks 23 formed on the ends of the bars 6 and the catches 24 pivoted at 25 to the bar. At the ends of the boX are retaining posts 2G and 27 movable laterally with reference to the platform and adapted to hold the molding or board at either end in position and also to assist in marking the angles between those shown on the lines.
The end posts are made preferably of metal, the upper part being angleshaped and tapering` toward the upper end and the lower part flat. rEhe posts are movably secured by thumb screws Q8 and 2f) respectively threaded into openings in slides 30 and 3l. rlhe slides are right-angled in shape, one part being movable in cut-out parts of the platform 7 above the end pieces, and at the lower corners are the stops 32 and 33 re spectively, formed integral iiith the slides and adapted for rests for the posts and to hold them in upright position. The slides are held against the end pieces by the respective thumb screws B-Lt and 35 which are inserted through slots 3()LL in the slides in threaded openings 36 in the end pieces. The ends of the slides opposite the posts are provided with extra openings 37 at which the ,posts may be secured if desired, and., by changing the thumb screws securing the slides into the holes in the opposite ends, the slides and posts may be moved the' same distance in the opposite direction. lllhen the molding or board to be mitered is placed in the proper position the post 2G or 27 is moved to the opposite side of the guides l2 with the slide and secured by tightening the thumb screws. I have shown the necessary guide yposts with vertical kerfs for all usual angles in mitering, but. others may be added if desired.
The method of using my invention will be familiar to any mechanic and its practical utility and simplicity, together with the small space into which it may be folded, mark it as an improvement over any similar device now is use.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A miter box consisting of a frame, a bar bearing guide posts hinged to the frame whereby the box may be folded into smaller space when not in use, means for locking the bar to the frame, the guide posts being set in said bar and having vertical kerfs, a
guide post with a vertical kerf rotatably secured to the opposite side of the frame at the middle thereof and adapted to be turned to a position parallel with the base of the frame when not in use, a platform secured to the upper part of the frame and retaining posts slidably secured to each end of the frame.
2. A foldingl miter box consisting` of a fram-e, a platform secured thereto, a bar bearing guide posts hinged to one side of the frame whereby the posts are folded upon the platform when not in use, means for locking the bar to the frame, the guide posts having vertical kerfs and being secured in said bar, a similar post rotatably secured to the opposite side of the frame and adapted to be turned to a position parallel with the base of the frame when not in use7 a slide movably secured to each end of the frame and. a postl adjustably secured to each of the slides and adapted for securing the material in position when the joints are out.
3. A miter box consisting` of a frame, guide posts with vertical kerfs secured at one side thereof, a platform secured above the frame, a guide post at the opposit-e side of the frame with a vertical kerf rotatably secured adjustable upon its longitudinal axis to register with the post opposite, a shank to which said post is secured7 adjust ably secured in a. slot in the frame at right angles to the post and having a squared part to lit said slot, a spring for forcing the squared part into the slot whereby the post is held in an upright position, the post being adapted to assume a horizontal posi tion when not in use.
