PHILIP HERBOLD, or GALION, oHIo.
CONVERTIBLE BED AND SEAT.
T0 all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP HERBOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Beds and Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to convertible beds and seats, and is an improvement on the article shown in my application, Serial No. 619931.
The object of thel present invention is to provide improved means for converting the larticle from a bed to a seat, or vice versa, so that it may be more readily and easily changed from one to the other.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide an improved stop or support to assist in holding the parts in posit-ion when adjusted to form a seat.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article in partly converted position, as in changing from bed to seat, or vice versa. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device when folded to form a seat- Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the article adjusted to form a bed.
The main parts of the article are similar to those described in my above entitled application. That is, 6 indicate the main legs braced by bars Ga and upper bars 24Y at t-he ends. The back frame 8 swings up and down on pivots 7 at the top of the rear legs, and the end pieces of said back frame have lugs 25 which stop against the end bars 2e when the back is swung down to form the bed, to prevent upward tilting of back frame 8 at hinged point. rIhe seat frame has side pieces 21 and a front piece 21, and legs 16 at the front, and the rear ends of the side bars 21 are connected to the lower ends of the side pieces of the back frame S by means of links 12, the links being hinged as at 27 to the seat and back frames respectively. 30 is a cross bar extending between the rear ends of the pieces 21 for t-he purpose ofmaking the back part of the seat frame rigid, so that it cannot spread or be drawn together by the strain of the spring fabric or the like with which the frames will be covered. This fabric is omitted from the drawings, for the sake of clearness since the invention relates to the frame structures which may be covered with any material desired and provided with suit- Speccation of Letters Patent.

able pads or upholstery. The above described parts are substantially the same as those disclosed in my application above referred to.
A new feature of the present invention is the use of links 22 which are pivoted to the side pieces 21 on the seat frame, as indicated at 22a, and also to the front ends of the side bars 24, as indicated at 22h. These links 22 guide or control the movement of the seat frame, as it is shifted in or out to form either a seat or a couch or a bed. Then the parts are adjusted to form a seat as in Fig. 2 t-he side bars 21 of the seat frame iit in between the side bars 24 of the fixed or main frame, and the inner ends of said bars 21 are then supported on inwardly projecting flanges or brackets 26 attached to the bars 21, the links 22 folding down between the bars 21 and 24. When the device is to be converted into a bed, the seat frame is pulled upwardly and forwardly, and swings over on the links 22 to .the extended position shown in Fig. 3, and by the same action the back 8 is swung down and the links 12 are swung up and out or unfolded, to rest on the lugs 2G, whereby the back 8, the links 12, and the seat frame 21 are all in the same plane, suitable to support and form a bed bottom. The links 22 serve to hold the seat frame in position and to enable it to' be more easily operated than if they were omitted.
As a further improvement I provide the rear ends of the bars 21 with downwardly projecting .stops 23 which depend in such position that when the device is adjusted to form a seat, as shown in Fig. 2, the links 12 will abut against said pieces 23. This prevents any further swing of said links and assists in holding the back in position, rigidly, preventing any looseness or tendency of the parts to yield or buckle under the effect of pressure on the back, and when in the position shown in Fig. 2 the lugs 25 stop against the rear legs 6, as shown in said ii'gure, whereby the lower end of the back is, so to speak, confined between the stops 23 and the rear legs 6, which serves to prevent any looseness or movement of the back under pressure.
Vhat I claim as new is:
1. In a convertible bed and seat, the combination of a fixed frame, a back frame pivoted to the fixed frame to swing to horizontal or upright position, a seat frame, swinging links connecting the sides of the seat freine, :mtl the iiXed fizune, :1nd permit/ting the seat freine to he .shifted in o1' ont :it the front of the fixed frame, and pivotetl links connecting the lower end of the back frame and the seat freine.
Q. In a convertible hed und seat., the oombination of n Xecl fi'mne, zi back yfreine pivotetl thereto to swing to horizontal o1' nplight position, u seat freine shiftable in or out at the front of the fixed freine, pivoted links connecting' the rear enel of the seat :traine :mtl Jthe lower enel of the back freine, and stops projecting from the seat freine and arranged to be sti'nck by, und liinit the swing` of, said links7 when the seat freine is shifted in and the heel; freine is swung to upright posit-ion.
In n Convertible bed :incl sent, the Coinbinntionof :L iXecl freine, n back frame pivotecl to the reni part of the fixed freine and adapted to swing to either upright or horizontal position,- L sent traine, swinging?T links Connecting the opposite .sides of the seat freine and the sides oi the fixed ii'zn'ne, links Connecting the reni' end of the sent freine :1nd the lower end of the beek freine, and stops projecting from the seat freine and arranged to be struck by the last mentioned links when the heel; freine is swung to upright position.
In testimony whereof, do alii); iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
