IMPROVEMENT 1N HARNESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Petent and making part of the salme.
To all whom @t nmy concern? `13e it k'nowrrthat I, Lewis WHITEHEAD, of the town of ITnnda,` m the v county of Livingston, in `the State of New York, have invented a new and improved YMode of Constructing Harness; and I do. hereby declare that the following, is a full and exact descriptionthereot, reference being` had lt-o the accompany ingv drawings and to @the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in so construct` ing the back-strap,` hip-strap, and orupper of harness that the usual buckles for fastening the hipstraps to the back-strap maybe dispensed with.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which `my invention appertains to make and use `the same,
I will now proceedltoy describe its construction and op` eration, referring t'o the-annexed drawings, in which- VFigure l is a plan-view oti my arrangement, show- `ingvtizie hackfstrap and hip-straps made of one piece,
i fandthemanner of attacbingt-he crupper.
E igures 2 and 3 are detached views ot' the same. ."Figures 4 and 5 show t-he'mode ofarrangingv the same pieces when the crupper and hip-straps are of me piece- Figures Gand' 7 show other modifications, as will be hereinafter setforth. i i
B-represents the back-strap, ot' suitable length, and
its rear end split fora certaindistance, so as to` form the hip-straps d a.'
D represents the crupper, which is made so as to extend up the back of 'the horse to the-.point-where the hip-straps are to descend, and at this point there are formed two loops or eyes c c ,in the front end of the crupper. Through these eyes c c'the hip-straps a a are passed,` which entirely dispenses with the Thesame object lnay be accomplished byelongating the Vupper or front ends of the crupper, and bending the ends downward, one ,to each side, as shown 1n fig. 5, forming the hip-straps al a.. A. ln this case the eyes or loops c c are formed enrV the rear end of the .back-strap B, as shown in lig. 4.
'By meansof the usual buckle attaching the haeltstrap to the saddle, the` hipstraps,'whether formed "1n one piece with the ba'ek-strap, orl with theernpper, can
readily b e adjusted to suit the horse.
The ends vofl thehip-'straps aulnay he forrned in various ways, to be attached to the breeehing-strap.
In'igs. 1 and 7 I have represented two different i If so desired, the hip-strapsandthe breechingstrapmay be made'of one piece; or, rather, the baclestrap, (or crupper,)` hip-straps, aud breechingstrap all bemude of one piece, andbent in suitable form.
" Having thus fully described ymy' invention,
lVhat l claim as new and desire to'secnre by Iletters Patent, is l 1. The hip-straps a a, when formed in one piece Vwith the back-strapA B, and passing through loops or eyes c c, formed on the npperends of the crupper D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The hipstraps a a, when formed in one piece -with the crupper D, and passing through loops or eyes c c, formed on the rear en'd of the back-strap B,
substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
L'EVVIS VVHITEHEAD.
