AUTOMATIC DOOR-CLOSER.

Be it known that I, CARL TACKE, Jr., subject of the German Emperor, residing at 35 Furstenbergerstrasse, Holzminden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Door-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automatic door closer of that kind, in which two track members or brackets, one being secured to the door post and the other to the door, cooperate with each other in a sliding or rolling manner on suitably formed tracks so as to lift the door when being opened.
The improvement according to the inven tion consists in the peculiar arresting device for automatically keeping the door in its open position. This device is shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic plan of one track member.
In the drawing, a and (Z are track members secured to the base plates a and 6, which latter are provided with openings 2', into which the ends of the opposite track members may protrude. The base plate a carrying the track member 0 may be secured at a suitable place to the door post and as a counterpart, the other base plate 6 carrying the track member d is secured to the door. The said track members are provided with inclined tracksc" (Z which are adapted to slide one on the other, a roller 7 being provided when rolling action is desired. When opening the door, it is lifted owing to the engagement of the inclined tracks. The free ends of the curved track members 0 and d (Fig. 2) have notches 0 and d, which are adapted to cooperate with ridges 2' arranged adjacent to the openings 17 of the said base plates. Owing to this engagement, the door is obviously held in the open position against the tendency to fall back into the closed position, the returning movement being however started by a slight jerk exerted on the door and releasing the engagement of the notches and ridges. The closing movement is obviously controlled by the cooperation of the track members forming inclined guideways so that the closing position coincides with the lowest position of the door, the latter being assumed to be provided with the ordinary door hinges but of course in such a manner that the door hinges admit of a rising and falling movement along the fulcrum line of the hinges.
The advantage of the herein described door closer is that it may be adapted to any ordinary door or gate construction provided with hinges of the type above referred to and that when it is combined therewith, it fulfils the object of the special helically mounted hinges, which are known for this purpose, While at the same time affording the more convenient arresting means.
.I claim:
A door closer comprising a pair of track members each supported by a base plate, secured to door post and door respectively, and cooperating with each other in an inclined path, the said members being provided at their free ends with notches adapted for the mutual engagement of ridges, which are disposed at the inner ends of the tracks adjacent to the base plate, substantially as described. and shown in the drawing.
