Description

MOSES PALMER, JR., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,232, dated May 17,1870.
To all whom it `may concern.-
B'e it known that I, MosEs PALMER, Jr., of Boston, in the county, of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shirt-Bosoms; and I do hereby declare Ythat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this? specication, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of the under side of my shirtbosom, showing the mode of attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, showing a modification thereof.
My invention relates to shirt-bosoms; and consists in the application of strips of whalebone, or other similar flexible substance, to
the border or ed ges thereof, whereby the bosom is ei'ectually preserved'from being crumpled by wear, and the set thereof materially improved.
Inl` the application of these stitteuing-strips, lettered A on the drawings, I usually arrange them around the border ofthe bosom and underneath the same. They are secured to the bosom by means of the slips or pockets b, formed in the cloth, in such a manner as to be readily removable vwhen necessary. Sometimes, instead of a long casing, I prefer to fornr loops c at different points, to conline the stiffening-strip to the cloth, making use of the short`pockets or stalls d to conne the ends thereof at the corners of the bosom, and prevent the strips from working out endwise.
When the upper corners ot the shirt-bosom are close to the neck-band, the short stifenin gstrips in the upper edges thereof may be omitted without material disadvantage 5 but when the bosom is broad they should be used.
It may also be found convenient to dispense with the horizontal stitfener at the bottom edge of the bosom. This will depend upon the length and style of the bosom; or a short strip may be introduced to stiien the bottom edge at its central portion only, instead of eX- tending from corner to corner.
Instead ol'whalebone I may employ strips of other material. Spring-steel, such as is used in the manufacture of hoop-skirts, will serve an excellent purpose. Wire may also be used, as well as thin strips of wood.
My shirt-bosom retains its set and smoothness in a marked manner. Even when conined by the outer clothing it is notcrushed thereby.
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shirt-bosom provided with the stieners A in its sides, or sides, bottom, and top edges, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above Ihave hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MOSES PALMER, JR.
Witnesses E. W. ANDERSON, EDW. P. MAsE.
