ANIMATED TOY.
i ,oaaeoa Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Juiye, i912.
Application filed January 19, 1912. Serial No. 672,029.
To all wlw/m, t may concern Be it known that I, AnoLr GUND, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Animated Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhe invention relates to wheeled toys, and its object is to provide a new and improved animated toy which simulates an animal, such as a dog, duck or the like, and when drawn over the floor moves certain members and at the same time emits soumis similar to those emitted by the animal sinmlated. i
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a body provided with a-movable mel'nber, a
sound producer within the said body and having a movable actuating member, wheels, shafts journaled on the under side of the said body and carrying the said wheels, one of the said shafts being provided with a crank arm, a link within the said body and connecting the said crank arm with t-he said movable body member, and a rod attached to the said movable actuating member of the sound producer, the said rod having a slot- 'ted head engaging the said crank arm.
A practical' embodiment of the invention, is represented in the accompanying drawingsforming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a longitudinal section through a'stuli'ed toy duck, which embodies one term of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
The animated toy, as shown, is in the form of a stuffed bird, such as a duck, and the toy is provided with a stuffed body A containing a frame B, stuiiing material C and a cover D of a fabric material. The frame B is arranged in the lower or bottom portion of the stuffed body A and to the front end of the said frame B is secured a vert-ical tube E extending upward through the neck A oi the body A and terminating in the head AL'.
The core A, of wood or other materiahfor the upper jaw or bill A4L is attached to the top of the tube E, and the core A5, of wood or like material, for the lower jaw or bill A6 is pivoted on the core A3and from the inner end of this core A5 extends rearwardly an arm or a rod A7 passing into the tube E by way of a slot E arranged in the front upper .emitted by the animal simulated.
portion of the tube E. On the under side of the frame B are secured front and rear bearings F and F extending through the bottom portion of the cover D, and the said bearings F and F are journaled in the front and rear shafts or axles G, G carrying wheels H, H adapted to travel on the floor. The front shaft G is provided with a crank arm G2 engaged by a link I extending up through the tube E and connecting with the eXtension arm or rod A7 of the core A5 of the lower jaw or bill A, and hence whenv the shaft G is rotated an up and down swinging motion is given to the lower jaw or bill AG byy the connection just described.
The frame B is approximately of inverted V shape in cross section, thus providing a recess at the under side, and in this recess is fitted and secured to the frame B a sound producer J, of any approved construction, arranged to produce sounds similar to those rI he sound producer J is provided with a movable actuating member J adapted to swing up and down and carrying at its forward end a rod K teruiinating in a slotted head K engaging the crank arm G2, so that when the shaft G is rotated an up and down swinging motion is given by the crank arm G2 to the slotted head K and hence to the movable actuating member J of the sound producer to cause the latter to emit sounds corresponding to those of the animal simulated.
When the animated toy is drawn forward over the iioor or other support the wheels H, H are rotated and consequently the shafts or axles G, G whereby the crank arm G2 imparts an up and down movementto the link I so that the latter swings the jaw or bill A( down and up, and at the same time the crank arm G2 imparts an up and down swinging motion to the rod'K whereby the movable member J of the sound producer is actuated and the latter emits sounds similar to those emitted by the animal simulated by the toy. In practice, the parts are so arranged that when the jaw or bill A6 swings downward sounds are produced. By arranging the frame B in the manner described the sound producer J is protected from the stuffing C to insure proper action of the sound producer in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, I
provided with a movable member, a sound producer within the -said body and having a. movable actuating member, wheels, shafts journaled on the bottom of the said body Y `and carrying the said wheels, one of the said shafts having a cranktarm, link within the said body and connecting t e said4 crank' arm with the movable member of the said body, and a rod attached to the movablev member of the said sound producer, the said rod having a slotted head engaging'the said crank arm independent of the said link.`
2. An animated toy, comprising a body simulating an animal, the said body' having a pivoted jawk provided with an inward extension, a frame within the body' and provided with a tube. extending in the neck of the said body, the said jaw being pivoted on the said tube, the saidjaw extension extending into the tube, a sound producer within the said body and attached to the Said frame, the said sound reducer .having a hinged actuating mem er extending approximately in a horizontal direction, wheels, shafts journaled on the said frame and carrying the said wheels, one of the said shafts having a crank arm, a link, connected with the said crank arm and extending upward through the said tube, the upper end of the link being connected with the extension of the said pivoted jaw, and a rod attached'to the said movable member of the jslotted head engaging the said crank arm .independent of the said link.
said sound producer and provided with av '3'. Ananimated toy, comprising a stuffedl bodyl simulating. an animal and provided with a fixed upper jaw,v and a lower pivotedy jaw, lthe latter having an inwardly-extending arm, a ran1e" 'within the said stuffed body and provided at the underzside with arecess, the said frame being provided with a'tube and extending upward through the neck of the saidpbody, the tube carrying the said fixed jawand the said pivoted jawarm extending into the Said: tube, a sound' pro# ducer attached to the said :trame and arranged within the said recess, the sound producer having ajrod terminating 1n a head having an elongated'slot, wheels, shafts i journaled on the under side of the said frame and carryingthe said wheels, one of ithe shafts being provided with a crank arm, and a link connected with the Said crank arm and extending up through the said tube, the
upper end `of thelink ,being`jconnected .with
the arm of the said pivoted jaw," the said crank arm being engaged by thev sa1d slotted head. v e In testimony whereof I have signed my named to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
