Be it known that I, JOHN E. citizen of the United States, and a resident county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following'is a speci tication.
My invention 'relates to improvements in sanitary drinking fountains or cups and has yfor its object the production of a `device of this character which will be of improved construction and eiicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these obj,cts in view my invention consists'in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Surrounding the nozzle l0 is a cup 1T which is in threaded connection as shown with the body of the device, said cu being of a form corresponda substantial y with that of the nozzle biit o greater dimensions so that a considerable space will intervene the adjacent surfaces of said nozzle and cup. The lower end of the cup 17 is in open communication with the upper end or mouth 18 of the drain passage 19, said opening and passage being formed in the body of the device as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The valve chamber 8 and the discharge passage 9 are in constant communication through the medium otI thc restricted passage 20. lVith this provision it will be seen that although the lower end of the passage 9 is closed by the valve l, a restricted flow of water will he permitted through the pas` sage 20 thereby obviating the possibility of the water in the fountain becoming stagnant and unsanitaiy, a constant flow being periiiitted through thisl provision.y
The discharge passage J -and the drain passage 19 communicate with each other through the openingl through which passes the valve-stem 13. The opening 21 however is 'closed by valves 22 and 22,the former bcing held in position by means ot' the uut 23 which is threaded upon the stein 123, and the latter by means ota shoulder which is formed upon said stem. Said valves are so positioned that the opening 21 will be closed thereby with the stem 13 at either of its terminalsof movement, the valve 22 being adapted to close said opening when said stem is in normal position and the valve 22' to close said passage when said stem is in depressed position. lf desired, the valve 22 and accompanying nut lil thereof may be dispensed with. ln this event however the sages; and a valve operative with said l'low of water when the valve stem is in normal position will not extend up through the passage 9 and nozzle 10, but directly through the lower end ot' said passage Si through the opening or passage 2l into the drain passage 19, the flow not being impeded, the course only thereof being changed. While l have illustrated and described the preferredl form at4 construction for carrying my invention into etl'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing` .from the spirit of the inven tion. IV therefore-do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifie-ations as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 'isf l. A device of the class described comprising an inlety chamber; a restricted outletfor said chamber; a valve chamber communicating with said outlet; a discharge passage leading from said valve chamber; a nozzle at the outer terminal of said passage; a valve governing said passage; a cupsurrounding .said nozzle; a drain passage leadingl from said eup, there being a passage connecting said discharge and drainpasfirst mentioned valve, for governing said last mentioned passage; said seeond mentioned valve being so positioned tliatf.Wl1en said lixst mentioned valve is in closed position said second mentioned valve .vill be in open position, and vice versa, substantially as (lCSClllJetl.

A device of the` class described conr prising an inlet chamber; a restricted outlet for said chamber; a valve chamber communicating with said outlet; a discharge passage leading from said valve chamber; a nozzle at the outer terminal et' said passage; an exteriorly projecting valve stem; a normally closed valve on said stem governing said passagi; a cup surrounding said nozzle; a drain passage leading from the bottom of said cup, there beingva passage establishing communication between said discharge and drain passages; a valve carried by said valve stem governingsaid last named passage, said last named valve being arranged to be in open position when said first named valve is in closed position, and vice Yersa; and a restricted unobstructed passage establishing communication betweenfsaio. valve chamber and said discharge passage, substantially as described.
4. A 'device of the class described comprising an inlet chamber; a restricted outlet for said chamber; a valve chamber cornmunieating with said outlet; a discharge passage leading from said valve chamber; a
