This invention relates to an ,improved valve for sanitary bubbling fountains and for other uses.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a valve device o this character which may ne readily manipulated and is adjustable to vary the flow of water therea through to correspond with tne pressure or head of the water so as to produce the dcsired flow at the bowl or cup oit the fountain,

Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved valve for this and like purposes which is simple in construction, which may be easily operated, and to pro duce a valve the parts of wnich are protected from unauthorized access to thereby preyent tampering with the valve by unauthorized persons.

The valve piece 24 is provided with two pairs of vertically separated inlet and outlet ports 42, 43, the ports of each pair communicating with the hollow interior 44 of thc valve piece and extending in Opposite directions therefrom as herein shown.
l-Vhen the valve piece is in its upper posilower or inlet ports 42 are thereby brought beneath the valve seat, and the valve ring or washer 27 is removedfrom said seat, so that at this time the said inlet ports are open to the pressure or head of the water supply. The water is free to flow` therefore, through the inlet ports and the bore of the valve piece 44, and is discharged through the outlet ports 43 into the rear end of the hollow shank through which it passes to thecup in :t manner hereinafter described.
In order to regulate the flow of water through the valve and to cut down the initial volume at the receiving side of the valve to that required at the cup of the fountain, I
may provide a regulating device which is made as follows: 4G designates a short rod which is contained within the hollow stem of the valve piece and extends at its lower end downwardly into the bere 44 of said valve piece. Said rod is screw-threaded at its lower endI` as indicated at 47, to engage internal screw threads 1n the upper end of the bore of the valve piece above the outlet ports 43. By turning said rod thus screwthreaded to the valve piece downwardly toward the outlet ports 423, the area of said ports may be restricted more or less to Correspondingly restrict the fiow of water through said ports and the pressure at which the water issues from said ports. The said regulating rod may thus be turned to regulate the pressure by means of a suit-able implement applied to a slot 48 at the upper end of the rod, and near the upper end of the valve piece stem. ln this manner I am able to restrict the outlet ports and vary the volume of water passing therefrom and correspondingly vary the pressure without distui'binggT the operating members of the valve n'iechanism, and without. therefore cutting ott the flow of water through the valve.
As herein shown the upper end of the valve stein is closed and the notched or grooved end of the regulating rod is protected by means of a knob 50 which is interiorly screw-threaded to engage over the exterior screw threads of the stem, as best shown in Fig. 2. The knob 50 constitutes, in addition to the functions described, a lock nut by which to securely lock the cap 34 on the valve piece stem. ln order to prevent water escaping around the regulating rod. I may provide the same with a shallow groove 52 (Fig. 2) in which to place. an annular packing 53 of any suitable material that fit-s closely within the hollow valve piece stem.
As herein shown the draw off valve 21 is provided with an externally threaded tubular extension or nipple 54 which is adapted to fit into either one of the internally screwthreaded projections 19 or 20, depending upon to which (projection the water supply pipe is connecte When said draw oft valve 21 is employed the lower extension 26 of the valve piece may be provided with a passage 56 which is in open communication with the high pressure side of the valve when the valve piece is depressed, as shown in Fig'.,` 1,` so that water may be at such time drawn from the device through the valve 21, as when it is desired to draw a glass of water from the device. Then the valve piece 24 occupies its upper or normal position water under the initial pressure of the system from which the water is supplied is free to pass` directly to the draw olf valve 21.
As herein shown the supporting member or shank 10 of the fountain is .formed with a central7 longitudinal diaphragu'i G0 to provide an upper passage 61 through which the water is conducted from the cut off valve to the cup. Said diaphragm also provides at the lower side of the shank a waste pai-'sage which receives water from a waste opening 63 at the bottom of the cup and conducts it to an outlet or waste nipple 64 at the rear of the supporting member or shank. The said nipple 64 may be screw-threaded to receive a waste pipe, or the water may flow therefrom into a receptacle beneath the same. A valve comprising, in combination with a hollow outlet member adapted for communication at its inlet end with a source supplying fluid under pressure, said member being provided at its inlet end with an opening surrounded at one. side by a body seat, a hollow valve piece having a hollow stem and slidable in said opening and' provided with a seat member to engage said body seat, and provided above said seat member with vertically separated inlet and outlet ports communicating with the hollow interior of the valve piece, abonnet oonnected to the hollow member through which said hollow stem extends, a cap screw- Ithreaded to the outer end of the hollow stem and slidable on the outer end of the bonnet, a spring acting on the cap to nor- Inally hold the valve piece seat member engaged-with the body seat and to maintain the inlet port of the valve piece above said body seat, a rod movable endwise in said hollow stem and adapted tio extend to, and by its endwise movement restrict the tlow of liquid4 through, said outlet port.. said rod heilig exposed at its upper end through the upper end of the hollow stem, and a knob screw-threaded to the upper end otE the stem to close the same and to constitute a lock nut to hold said cap to the stem.

A valve Yfor the purpose Set forth, comprising a member provided with an opening surrounded at one side by a body seat, a hollow valve piece provided with a hollow stem and slidable in said opening and provided with a seating member to engage the bodyseat and above said seating member with vertically separated inlet and outlet ports in communication with the interior of tbe valve piece, a bonnet outwardly tl `ough which saidy hollow stem extends, a cap slidable on the outer end ot the bonnet and affixed to said stem, a packing device surrounding the stem within the bonnet, a spring interposed between said packing de vice and said ca p, and a regulating member movable in said hollow stem and valve piece to restrict the tlow ot fluid through said outlet port.

A valve for the purpose set forth, com prising a men'iber provided with au opening surrounded at one side by a body seat, a hollow valve piece provided with a hollow stem and slidable in said opening and pro vided with a seating member to engage the body seat and above said seating member with vertically separated'inlet and outlet ports in communication with the interior ot' the valve piece, a bonnet outwardly through which said hollow stem extends, a fap screwthreaded to the outer end ot" said stem and slidable on the outer end of said bonnet, a pat-,hing device surrounding the stem within the bonnet'. a spring interposed between said packing device and said cap: a regulating' member movable within said hollow stem and valve piece to regulate the How of fluid through said outlet port, said regulating member being exposed through the outer end ot the hollow valve piece stem and a member screw-threaded to the outer end otsad stem to close the same and to constitute a. lock nut to lock the Cap to the valve-"piece stem.
