Description

1I, PETERS. PHOT'O-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C `To all whom it "may concern yf i dimmi Sttte stent @lamine j N Jonn'gw.HOLLINGSWORTH, or YMOUNT VERNON, INDIANA.
Imm `Patent No. 103,189, -aated'May 1.7, 1870.
` `Iii/:PriorEMIINT ARTIFICIAL TenTH.
1 The VSchedule lreferred to in thesev Letters Patent and-making part of the same Beit known that Ldonv` W. HOLLINGSWORTH,
" ofgMount lVernon.; inthe county'of Posey and State of Indiana, 'have invented` certain new and useful Im- 1proi'ements in the Modeof Preventing Artificial Teeth :and Gums fromOrac-kin'g orBreaking; and I do hereby declare that `the following is a full', clear, and ex- `act description thereof', reference being had to the ac# V companying drawingsand to the letters oi` reference marked thereon.whiclrforln a part of thissp'ecication.
The nature of my'invention consists in coating the `inner andmarginal-surices of artificial` gums with a ""compound that will prevent the teeth from breaking l gby the contraction of th'ernetal when chilled.
l Incl-detto enable others skilled in the-art to which "my invention appertains' tomake use'the`sarne,1 lwlll now proccedto describe the manner in which the same is or may beperformefb referring to the annexed drawings, in which-'L l Figurel is a` vertical 4section `through one of the Figui-e2 isa side View, and
" 1 Figure 3 isa front View.
G represents a `metal plate with Atwosections of teeth, A and B,attac`l`1ed to it. This plate is Aeast directly upon `the teeth and around the pins, as at D i fromthence extending over theinner surfaceof thcV l gums, and overlapping the margin of the lgnrns at O.
Now, when the metal embraced between the points C and Dis chilled, it very` often contracts so forcibly l upon the teeth as `to break .them in pieces, or, at least, crackgthem'andspoil/their appearance. v
` To prevent `this I` coatthe inner and marginal surfaces of "tbeigums with a ,suit-able plastic compound, `j when the metal` maybe cast upon the teeth without y i danger, asthe `plastic compound" readily yields tothe contracting metal, thereby'relieving the teeth from the rigid pressure of lthe metal, and their consequent breakage. l Y
The compound which I propose to use for this purpose is composed of French chalk, earbonate of mag nesia, borax, and water. French chalk andfcarbonate y of magnesia are alike indestructible `by, the low temperature to which they are exposed in the process of molding.
' French chalk alone would form too solid a body, and carbonate of magnesia alone would form too light" a body; but, by mixing the two, we have a body of the proper plasticity.
` The borax is added to lioldvt-he mass together, and in position. .The water is addedtounitc all, and make the application easy and simple, with a small eamels` `hair' brush, or. other suitable instrument.
There'are, doubtless, many other substances which would serve the same purpose just as well as this compound; hence, I do not confine myself to the use of any particular material for coating the gums as above described, the object being merely to interpose some `plastic material which will yield to the contract-ion. of
the metal. A i Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, land desire to 'secnreby Let-` ters Patent, is- I Coating the inner and marginal surfaces of artificial gums with some plastic material, preparatory to casting'the metalupon the same, Vsubstantially as and for the purposes herein` set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses. JOHN W. HOLLINGSWORTH.-
