DESK-TABLE. v I i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filed September 25, 1909. Serial No. 519,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HERZOG, a
citizen of the United States of America, resldlng at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented W-+--eertain new hand useful Improvements in DeskT'ables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to desk tables, and consists in various features of construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawingsFigure l is a bottom plan view of the table, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof, showing the extension lid in stored position on the left-hand side and in extended position on the righthand side; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section .with the extension lid in stored position;Fig. f is a similar view with the lid in extended position; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the engaging slides.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to obtain a construction of extension section which is adapted to be raised to the level of the top of the stationary section.
Furthermore, it is an object to obtain a simple and easily operated means for elevating the extension and for locking the same in position during use.
These objects are accomplished by the following construction:
A is. the stationary table top preferably provided with depending side rails B upon three of its sides.
C is the extension top section, which carries the complementary depending front rail section D.
E are stationary slides arranged beneath the table top parallel to the side rails thereof, and connected at their forward ends to the cross bar F.
I respectively secured to said members.
The member H is preferably in the form of a metallic angle, having a portion H extending over the end of the slide G with a hook H at its upper end. There is also ahorizontal portion H extending beneath the slide and terminating in a downwardly and outwardly projecting lug H H is the pintle upon the end portion H, which projects outwardly and is adapted to engage a longitudinal slot J in the stationary slide E.
The member I is preferably mortised into the stationary slide E, having a longitudinally-extending portion 1 fitting a portion of the groove J. At the inner end of this portion, is an enlargement 1 having an inclined cam slot I and provided with an entering slot 1 which connects this cam slot with the groove J. The outer end of the member I is provided with a bracket portion I which forms a means of connection between the slide E and the cross bar F, and there is also an inwardly-projecting lug I for cooperating with the lug H as will be hereinafter described.
The slides G perform the further function of supports for a drawer K carried by the extension section, and to this end are provided with the guide grooves G, with which tongues L on the sides L of the drawer engage.
The extension top C is provided on the under side thereof and outside of the slides G with a pen box or holder M, and an ink well holder N. These members are pivotally secured to the under face of said extension, and in the extended position thereof may be turned outward for access thereto, while in stored position these members lie between the slides E and the side rails B. The ink well holder N is recessed to re- "ceive an ink bottle 0 and the under side of the extension C is provided with a pad F, upon which the bottle seats in stored posltion to prevent spilling of the ink.
In use, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the extension section is stored beneath the stationary top A, in which position the extension top Crests upon the upper edges of the slides E and the pintles H engage the inner end of the slot J. To extend the table, the extension section is drawn outward until the pintles H engagethe slotted end portions of the members I and the lugs H are drawn beyond the cooperating lugs I. In this position, the inner edge of the extension top 0 is beyond the outer edge of the stationary top A, and may be lifted upward into the same plane. When thus elevated, the lugs H will be raised above the lugs I, and by then moving the section slightly inward, said lugs will be engaged with each other. The weight of the projecting portion of the extension section will then tilt the same, so as to raise the pintles H into engagement with the cam slots 1 and during the further inward movement of the section the pintles will be forced upward until the slides G are level and support the top 0 in the plane of the top A.
The table may be contracted by merely drawing outward the extension section to disengage the lugs H and I, permitting the extension section to drop and to be forced inward beneath the stationary top A.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a stationary table section, of an extension top normally stored beneath the top of said stationary section, a grooved stationary slide on said stationary section, an extension slide having a pintle at its inner end engaging said groove, a bearing intermediate the ends of said extension slide, and a cooperating bearing on said stationary slide for engaging with the first-mentioned bearing upon the lifting of the extension top, said first mentioned bearing forming a fulcrum for raising the inner end of the slide, and a cam on said stationary slide for engaging said pintle on said extension slide and guiding the latter into its raised position. v
2. The combination with a stationary table section, of an extension top stored beneath the top of said stationary section, a slide for supporting said extension top, a
guide on said stationary section having a horizontal slot and an upwardly and inwardly inclined slot connected therewith, a pivot pin carried by the inner end of said extension slide adapted to alternatively engage said slots and permitting the lifting of the extension top, a lug on said extension slide intermediate its ends, a cooperating lug on said guide above the lug on said extension slide when the latter is in the plane of storing, said lugs being engageable in reverse position whereby the lug on the guide forms a fulcrum for lifting the inner end of the extension slide, said inclined slot cooperating with the pivot pin to automatically draw the extension slide inward upon the lifting of the inner end of the latter.
3. The combination with a stationary table section, of an extension section stored beneath the top of said stationary section, a slide for supporting said extension section having a pivotal engagement at its inner end permitting the lifting of the outer end, a bearing upon the stationary section for engaging said slide upon the lifting of the outer end forming a fulcrum for lifting the inner end whereby said extension top is raised into the plane of the stationary top,
a cam upon the stationary section, and a member upon the slide cooperating with the cam upon the lifting of the inner end of the slide to automatically draw the latter inward.
4c.
