Application filed December 18, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in sash holders, and the same has for its ob-' -ject more particularly to provide a simple,
effective and reliable apparatus which may be readily applied to a window sash in order to hold the same in any adjusted position.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an apparatus which may be conveniently applied to a window intermediate the sash and the guides therefor, whereby said sash may be held firmly against lateral movement therein, and thus prevent the undue rattling or vibration of the sash within its frame.
Further, said invention has for its objcct to provide an apparatus which may be readily inserted between the adjoining horizontal edges of the upper and lower sash members whereby to secure. said sashes in position or maintain the same against transverse movement or rattling. I
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a window casing and sash, and a holder constructed according to, and embodying my said invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the holder, the same being shown with the distending member thrown out of engagementwith its cooperating parts; Fig. 3 is a rear edge view, and Fig. 4: is a transverse section taken on the line 14 of Fig. 3.

14 denotes the holder comprising a pair of similarly shaped plates 15, 15 made of thin sheet metal, or other suitable material. The said plates 15, 15 are provided at their upper and lower ends with laterally projecting members or extensions, 16, 16,17, 1.7 respectively, and about midway of the ends of said plates, and intermediate the laterally projecting members 16, 17, the plate 15 is provided with a short laterally projecting extension 18 having its end 19 curved slightly forwardly, and the plate 15 is provided wit-h a similarly located flat segmental projecting portion 20 which extends beyond the end of the laterally projecting extension 18, and extends slightly upward. The plates 15, 15 are secured together at their lower ends by rivets 21, 21 and at their upper ends by rivets 22, 22 The free ends of the projecting members 16, 16 are slightly bent apart to form a pair of separated parallel ends intermediate of which is disposed the upper end of a curved lever'23 which is pivotally secured to the projecting members 16, 16 by the rivet 22 The lever 23 is provided at its lower or free end with a circular finger portion 24 which is arranged at substantially rightangles to the main or body portion of said lever, and at the inner edge of said lever, about midway of its length, is provided a laterally projecting member 25 having wedge- shaped sides 26, 26 extending upwardly from its longitudinal edges. The said sides 26, 26 have their pointed ends arranged adjacent to the outer end of the projecting member 25, and their highest portions arranged adjacent to the body of the lever 23. The said projecting member 25 with its wedge-shaped sides 26, 26 form a distending wedge adapted to ride upon the segmental projection 18, and between the yielding or extensible central portions of said plates 15, 15 in order to distend or force the same apart.
The plate 15 is provided at its inner edge adjacent to its laterally projecting members 16, 17 with short upwardly projecting ears or lugs 27, 27 which serve as stops adapted to contact with the outer surface of the guide strip 11, and thereby prevent the device as a whole being inserted too far between the edge of said guide strip and the sash 13.
28, 28 denotes apertures provided in the projecting members 16, 17 to receive screws or nails for permanently securing the device to a window sash.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A sash holder comprising a pair of parallel plates secured together at their opposite ends, a distending member pivotally secured at one end to said plates and adapted to be forced between said plates to spread the same, and means for shifting said distending member into and out of engagement with said plates, substantially as specified.
2. A sash holder comprising a pair of parallel plates secured together at their opposite ends, a wedge adapted to be forced between said plates to spread the same, and means for shifting said wedge into and out of engagement with said plates, substantially as specified.
'3. A sash holder comprising a pair of parallel plates secured together at their o-pposite ends, guides arranged upon said plates intermediate their connected ends, a wedge adapted to be forced between said guide and said plates to spread the latter, and means movably secured to said plates for shifting said wedge into and out of engagement with said plates, substantially as specified.
4. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured together at their opposite ends, an arm pivotally secured at one end to said plates, and a wedge carried by said arm adapted to be shifted into and out of engagement with said plates, substantially as specified.
5. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured together at their opposite ends, guides arranged intermediate the ends of said plates, an arm pivotally secured at one end to said plates, and a wedge carried by said arm adapted to be shifted into and out of engagement with said plates, substantially as Specified.
6. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured together at their opposite ends and provided at said ends with laterally projecting members, an arm pivotally secured at one end intermediate the projecting members arranged at one end of said plates, and a wedge carried by said arm adapted to engage said plates intermediate said guides to spread said plates apart, substantially as specified.
7. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured together at their opposite ends and provided at said ends with laterally projecting members, guides extending laterally from said plates intermediate their securedends, an arm pivotally secured at one end intermediate the projecting members at one end of said plates, and a wedge carried by said arm adapted to engage said plates intermediate said guides to spread said plates apart, substantially as specified.
8. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured to ether at their opposite ends and providec with registering laterally projecting members, a pair of registering'guides extending from said plates intermediate the ends thereof, an arm pivotally secured at its upper end intermediate the registering projecting members at the upper end of said plates, and a wedge carried by said pivoted arm and extending therefrom and adapted to be forced into engagement with said Plates intermediate said guides to force said plates apart, substan tially as specified.
9. A sash holder comprising a pair of flexible plates secured to ether at their opposite ends and provided with registering laterally projecting members, a pair of registering guides extending from said plates intermediate the ends thereof, stops extending forwardly from the said plates and arranged intermediate said guides and the laterally projecting members at the opposite ends of said plates, an arm pivotally secured at its upper end intermediate the registering projecting members at the upper end of said plates, and a wedge carried by said pivoted arm and extending therefrom and adapted to be forced into engagement with said plates intermediate said guides to force said plates apart, substantially as specified.
