GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed August 21, 1911. Serial No. 645,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Gr. Sonnnox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates and hangers therefor, generally, more particularly the adjustable type. The invention has for its object to provide for readily effecting the adjustment of the gate to enable it to assume the required angle of elevation to the ground or surface for clearance of any obstruction or obstacle or other purpose.
A further object is to provide for readily suspending or hanging the gate in position from the hinge-post.
A still further object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, expeditious, inexpensive and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrat ing the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, Figure l is a broken perspective of the gate. Fig. 2 is a broken sectional plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a broken transverse sectional view of the same.
In carrying out my invention, I devise the gate 1 preferably of parallel spacedapart transverse or upright bars 1 and longitudinal bars or slats 1', all pivotally connected together in well known way to allow of their angular adjustment as will presently appear.
A metallic member or hanger 2 provides for suitably hinging or hanging the gate in working or effective position as well as provides for aiding the adjustment thereof as will be apparent presently. Said metallic member' or hanger 2 is of substantially Y-form in general outline, the divergent ends of which, however, are terminated in short horizontal extensions or portions 3, themselves terminated in eyes 3, which latter receive the ordinary L-shaped hinge form of staples 4, driven into, and projecting from the hinge-post 5. The hanger 2 has applied thereto oblique or diagonal,
metal, the ends thereof terminating or being formed into eyes 6 and 7 respectively, which eyes receive suitable nut-equipped bolts 8 and 9, respectively, passing through transverse members of the gate at its hinged end and through the hanger member 2, respectively. I Y
The hanger has its portion 10, answering to the stem of the Y,terminated in clip or keeper-like form, as at 11, the clip or keeper receiving the vertical portion of an outstanding bracket 12, suitably secured to a transverse member of the gate. Through the lateral plate-like portions of the clip 11 is suitably inserted and fixed in position a J-shaped bolt-like member 13, which is adapted to efleet engagement with the teeth or notches of a rack 14, adjunctive of the bracket 13, as clearly disclosed by Fig. 3. This arrangement, it is apparent, allows of the suitable adjustment of the gate by vertically moving that portion of the latter beyond the hinging end thereof, the slats, as before noted, having pivotal connection with the transverse members of the gate, allowing of such movement. As the gate is thus adjusted or moved it will be noted that the bolt-like member 13 of the clip or keeper 11 will be moved into the required notch of the rack 14: for aiding in effecting such adjustment.
The bracket 12, it will be observed, is grooved or channeled along its vertical portion as at 15, which groove or channel, together with the clip 11, is adapted to receive a key or pin 16 as seen particularly in Fig. 3, for the efi'ective retention of the clip 11, with its bolt-like member 13, in engagement with the rack-equipped bracket 12 of the gate, thus holding the gate in its adjusted position. The pin or key 16 is adapted to be connected to, and is suitably dependable from a chain 17 or like means,.in turn connected to the eye formed by the curved portion or head of the J-shaped bolt-like member 13 of the clip or keeper 11.
It is thought that the advantages and benefits of my invention have been fully disclosed from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying illustration or drawing, it only being necessary, possibly, to emphasize the fact that the invention is extremely simple, embracing. but few parts, and accordingly inexpensive of manufacture, while it is readily applied for;
crossing braces 6 and 7, preferably of flatuse in connection with most gates of this type and may be placed in position upon either side of thegate.
What is claimed is 1. A gate of the type described, including a hanger-member having a clip terminal, a bracket having a rack and a groove, said bracket and rack being received by said clipterminal and said c1ip-terminal having a bolt-like member adapted to engage said rack, and a key received by said groove and said clip-terminal.
2. A gate of the type described, including a hanger-member, of substantially Y-shape, having horizontal terminal-portions at its divergent ends, diagonal crossing braces v having eye-ended terminals and fastening bolts insertible through said eye-ended terminals, the hanger-member and the gate, a
rack-equipped bracket applied to the gate HARRY G. SCHENCK. l/Vitnesses CHAS. H. GRos, CHARLES MoCnARY.
