UNITED STATES JAMES CZEL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
ICE-CREEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial No. 678,218.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES (12131., a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at' Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ice creepers, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel plate that can be easily and quickly clamped to the heel of a shoe to prevent a person from slipping upon icy, smooth or frozen surfaces.
Another object of this invention is to provide an ice creeper with detachable calks or prongs that can be removed, sharpened or renewed when broken.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and ref erence will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ice creeper in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same as applied to the heel of a shoe.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a plate conforming in plan to the shape of the heel, and formed integral with said plate and at right angles thereto are lugs 2 and 3. The lugs 2 are adapted to engage the inner side of a heel 4 and adjustably mounted in the lugs 3 are clamping screws 5 having heads 6 for engaging the outer side of the heel 4. The lugs 2 are located at the side edges of the plate 1 and the lugs 3 spaced apart whereby the screws 5 can readily cooperate with the lugs 2 in retaining the plate 1 upon the bottom of the heel.
The bottom side of the plate 1 is provided with bosses 7 and extending through said plate and said bosses are detachable calks 8 in the form of screws 9 having pointed or tapered ends 10. The calks 8 are located in proximity to the lugs 2 and 3 and said calks project a sufiicient distance below said plate whereby they can engage in a smooth surface and prevent the plate 1 from skidding or slipping upon the smooth surface.
What I claim is An ice creeper comprising a plate conforming in plan to the shape of a heel, a plurality of bosses depending from the lower face of said plate, said plate formed with a plurality of openings extending through said bosses and having screw threaded walls, headed screws engaging the threaded walls of said openings and depending below said plate, the heads of said screws being countersunk in the upper face of said plate, vertically disposed lugs projecting from the forward edge of said plate at each end of said edge, vertically disposed spaced lugs formedintegral with the upper face of said plate at the rear thereof and having their outer faces forming a continuation of the side edge of the plate, adjustable clamping screws carried by said lugs at the rear ,of
said plate, and heads mounted upon the for-' ward ends of said screws and cooperating with the lugs at the forward end of the plate for maintaining the plate in position upon a heel.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
